Stalebread Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 The New York Times has an article rating rums. They say they tasted 20 rums but only listed their preferred ten. It would be good to have a look at the ten that did not make the cut but I don't see a complete list. Still, interesting. LINK There is also an article about rum cocktails.
dicko Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Cool article! Bacardi 8 and mt *** XO can be found at very decent prices where I am. El dorado is on my hit list! thanks for the post
thechenman Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I agree...it would have been much more helpful if they had listed all 20 rums in the tasting. However, as with cigars...it all comes down to what you like...so, the steal and modify an old adage...drink what you like, like what you drink.
samb Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Its interesting. I noticed Sailor Jerry didnt make the cut
bassman Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Nice to see Barabancourt & Gossling on the list. Wonder if Zacapa didn't make the cut or they just didn't try it?
Stalebread Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 . . . Wonder if Zacapa didn't make the cut or they just didn't try it? I was wondering the exact same thing.
stargazer14 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Interesting. I was not overly impressed with the Bacardi 8, but am in love with the Zacapa so I too wondered if it was tried.
Ozz1113 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Thanks for the link. Maybe this was why Zacapa didn't make the list: "some of the aged rums we liked least were unfathomably sweet. " They probably thought it was too sweet. I purchased a bottle of the Santa Teresa for a friend for Christmas. About a week later I tried it for the first time. Straight, no ice. Whew! It was rough at first but the finish was great.
Stalebread Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Thanks for the link. Maybe this was why Zacapa didn't make the list:"some of the aged rums we liked least were unfathomably sweet. " They probably thought it was too sweet. Yep. That would be my guess. I sent Asimov an e-mail to see if he would reveal the entire list of 20. We'll see if I get a response.

acidmase Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 As a person who works in the liquor industry. The top sellers are El Dorado 15, Ron Zcapa 23 anos and Diplomatico
trumpetchris Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 must be why zaya isn't on the list either. Pretty sweet. Barbancourt is tasty rum.

samb Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 How'd you go? It'd be nice to see the rest of the list.
Stalebread Posted December 13, 2009 Author Posted December 13, 2009 How'd you go? No reply from Asimov.
Wil Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Just discovered this thread. Thought the comments in the article re: aging rums were particularly interesting. Have picked up a bottle of Bacardi 8 to see how it compares to the Mt *** xo (a 1 litre bottle of the former is roughly the same as a 700ml bottle of the latter)
