The thread has gone pretty much the way I envisioned....All over the place

Thinking out loud I would explain it 80% cigar inconsistency and 20% personal taste. I am sure I could blow Shrinks mind with some 08 Magnum 46's, and JC would surely love some 08/03 Winstons I have. Then again....maybe not.

When I see that someone struggles with say Cohiba Sig IV or Sir Winstons I feel pretty bad as they are some of my favourite cigars. What runs through my head is: did I choose them? I wonder what code/year?

I smoke predominantly young stock in order to understand (try to) what is going on at ground level when it cones to cuban cigars. It is hard to recommend stock based on average experience over a long period of time. Far better/more useful is having a good knowledge of month to month stock in terms of constrution and flavour.

We see inconsistency first hand daily and ever since 1997. It is a lot better since 2006 but still not where it should be.

SCDH line. The only one in the line that I can stand is the Principe. Every Fuerza I've had, from young to 4 years old, I've put down with more than half left. I've tried singles of the Punta, Muralla, Mercaderes, and Officios, none were pleasant. The flavor profile of the line is just not something that I enjoy.

One cigar that I used to not get is the RASS. I bought a box back in 04 and pretty much thought "Meh." Gave away about half and suffered through the rest and kept 2 sitting at the bottom of the humidor. Late last year, I pulled one out and was just astounded at how well it had aged, so I bought a cabinet with the express intent to age it. I received them and when I tasted the O8 batch, I was in love. Since then, I've ordered two more cabs with another sitting in the Czar locker. I'm now a RASS convert.

That's what's great about having someone in the trenches like you. I absolutely agree that inconsistency is the biggest problem with Cuban cigars today. It really seems like every brand goes through hot and cold streaks, so it's nice to know when somebody's hot. I have yet to have a great Cuaba Distinguidos, but I have about 35 more chances.

Thanks for the compliment but we get it wrong as well. Less and less these days but we do the best we can. In the end it is not an exact science but you can eliminate most of the issues through construction, aroma at cold and smoking current stock regularly to get a line on how they are tasting. One of the questions we always ask when a new client asks for advice on a purchase is "what do you love now in the way of cigars and why? Partagas 898 V Men generally like Bolivar Inmensas etc.

Prez, not blowing smoke, you guys have been killing it in terms of quality, haven't gotten it wrong with me yet.

Back on topic, agree, don't get the R&J SC either although I have tried.

Another nemesis for me is the HDM PETITE ROBUSTO. The draw on these have been far too easy and to be honest, the flavour of these is pretty rank. Considering I love the Epicure Especial and Epicure 2's, I'm very surprised the HDMPR's are so bad.

Monte petit edmundo. I've tried to like this cigar but it just doesn't do it for me. The HDM petit robusto I didn't like at first but after some rest it's grown on me.

LGC Medaille D'Or No 4 - On the strength of MRN having identified it as favorite, have repeatedly tried it and have found it wanting or aweful.

08 RASS. When I returned to smoking cigars this year, this was one of the first Habanos that I bought. Initially, I liked it. As I smoked through more of the exemplary 07-08 production, RASS stands out to me as the least desirable. The remainder of mine are put away... we'll see.

I guess we have all tried cigars that we have heard rave reviews about and then when we have had them we are somewhat miffed about what all the fuss is about .

I personally think that on the whole the Cohiba line is overrated and over priced ,the siglo IV was not bad .

But my cigar nemesis would have to be Habanos with there inconsistency in construction and taste

Cheers Oz :cigar:

There are several popular cigars I just don't care for at all. Mag 46, PSD4 and Siglo VI immediately come to mind. While not a favorite, I do like the RyJ Beli & would pick it over a BBF- and Bolivar is one of my favorite brands, except for the BBF & BRC.

For me it is the Cohiba Robusto.

My first purchase of them was some 05's. Then I've picked up some singles along the way. I guess I just have bad luck with them. Seeing all the reviews I've been tempted to pull the trigger on more but keep thinking back on what I have had. Just can't do it.

While I haven't smoked enough of a single cigar from enough of a variety of sources to declare a Nemesis, from what experience I do have I have yet to smoke a good Ramon Allones Specially Selected. Another popular puro that's left me consistently wanting is Montecristo No. 2 - though my experience is limited to a single 10-box from '08. Montecristo Especial No. 1 is another I grudgingly admit to not enjoying; I've smoked a couple from different sources and have been left cold. I smoked a single, epic Bolivar Belicoso Fino about a year ago and have been chasing it ever since - several cigars later, I've yet to smoke one I would even call good let alone one that matched that fateful stick. The Bolivar Petite Corona did the exact same to me. But one cigar that has yet to me right is the Partagas Short - smoked about 10 of them and I get a GREAT flavor...for the first two puffs. The rest, bland. Go ahead and crucify me now ;)
