Van55 Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 It is often the case that the commercial release of a new Cuban cigar does not measure up to the hype surrounding the prototype. The cigars that Sucking rated 100 and that rendered Smithy and Ayala speechless were prototyes made for the Festival, as I understand it. Now the the commercial release has hit the shops, does anyone know if they measure up to the prototype by consensus?
Tampa1257 Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Van, you know that James' name is Suckling.
Tone_NY Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Van you should know by now, that whatever CA says is the gospel!
Van55 Posted November 13, 2009 Author Posted November 13, 2009 Van, you know that James' name is Suckling. My mistake. Typographical elision.
samb Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Van, you know that James' name is Suckling. I hope it didnt snuff him like that ol' RA Gigantes did .
El Presidente Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Van, we smoked our Havana Cohiba Reservas from February after 4- 5 months rest in our humidors. I plan to do the same this time around and then see how they measure up. I would take any reviews pre Christmas on this release with a pinch of salt. Those puppies have gathered some serious frequent flier points since they left Havana mid September.

My good friend Yoruba Hacker smoked one right off the truck and gave it a fine review, but it didn't seem to leave him speechless as your Festival ones did to you. I always take a review of a new cigar with a pinch of salt. You can't judge a cigar on the basis of a single sample -- especially when the cigar has less than a year in the box. But it will be interesting to see what happens to the price point of these cigars once the reviews of the commercial release start flowing out.
Stalebread Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 OK, 5,000 boxes with 15 each, that's 75,000 Cohiba Gran Reserva. Over what period of time are they made? Is there a distinct cutoff between making the ones for the festival and the rest of them? How do we know where the prototype cigars end and the "commercial" ones begin? Rollers are working on the cigars for the festival. They get to a certain number and stop. Then start again saying, "Now let's work on the CGRs for everyone else." ? Also, are the terms "festival" cigars and "prototype" cigars synonymous ?
