El Presidente Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 The following was forwarded by Jose who gets to read the FOH forum everyday but cannot post. He sends his best to all members ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________ Piece of History Brands that remained independents from the Trust. Reading about the Cornering of Havana cigar by the Yanks I found this in an old paper called Havana Cigars from 1910 and I just wanted to share it with you all. Apols for the translation into English though I did my best. In the beginning of the XX Century , The H.B. Collins and Co; the Havana Commercial Co.; the American Tobacco Co, amongst others came to the Island when the Spanish were ready to sell out the cigar business (brands and factories). In a few years they took over a great deal of the business, holding up to 291 cigar brands and 85 cigarettes brands. For those, who really want to go deeper in the birth of the Cuban Cigar there is a beautiful story around this hard time for Spanish proprietors by the time they were leaving the Island fearing that the Cubans would take retaliation against them by losing the War. None of that ever happened. So here is the list of those who remained independent and ready to face the American Trust. 1. Por Larrañaga The 2nd factory opened in Havana in 1834 (Ken might spell it out correctly by now) 2. Punch 3. Partagás 4. H.Upmann 5. Flor de Tomás Gutiérrez 6. Ramón Allones 7.
