you are completely correct re barnes more tactical sense than gits but the goalposts have more tactical sense than gits.

barnes is actually originally a fly half that got shuffled out to in centre as others in line before him but if he returns to the wallabies i believe it would be best if he played fly half (i'm pretty certain that at school - he was well known here from a very young age as an exceptional rugby player, league player and cricketer - he was a 5/8 come half back). it helps free up giteau. and takes giteau away from that role.

reds made him captain only when horwill was out injured and, as deeply as i love the reds and they can usually do no wrong (bar appoint a hated nsw player as coach), they had no choice. there was simply no other option. it was barnes or quade cooper and spare us from that. when 20 year old kids are your veterans and senior players, you know it will be a long season.

the sort of bloke barnes is - walked out on the reds after giving his word to fans, the admin and other players. has signed up for only a year with nsw as he will (and please quote me back if it doesn't happen) also walk out on them after a year and go to melbourne. the bloke could not spell loyalty or integrity.

wayne bennett has long believed he has league in his blood and that he will return to the broncos. can't see it but provided he stays out of qld, don't care. at least league taught him to tackle.

re mortlock, could not agree more. will be greatly missed.

that's interesting to know the ins and outs about Barnes. one of many nowadays that swear by the jersey forever and then do the professional thing. Except swapping between NSW and Qsland is a good way of getting yourself shot...

Just watching the half-time commentary on TV here..

Tom McGurk: "How do we cure the Irish scrum problem George?"

George Hook: "Lourdes would be my suggestion."

Good game. Ireland looked set to collapse 10 minutes into the second half but they hung in there for the draw. The last 10 minutes of the match was great rugby.

The Irish lineout was the main thing that kept them in the game.

Jerry Flannery is a cousin of mine so that would explain that! :lookaround:

This is one of those games you wonder why you got up at 1am to watch.

To be honest both teams are mediocre only being outshone in that department by the Caplan the ref.

I liked the Irish adventurous backs bowever the forwards are not up to the mark for the world cup.

Our backline led by "Gitteau the Clueless" decided to kick away 80% of posession.....mostly poorly. His days at flyhalf surely have finished after that display. Our forwards went well exluding the lineout (again).

And so the wobblies move to Scotland in search of a team they can beat well and reignite an intelligent attacking form of football that apparently has been laid to rest in the annals of Australian rugby history.

From an aussie point of view of course. :lookaround:

Getting away with a draw against even a mediocre Australian side is still a cause for celebration in these parts. You're right though, the forwards don't have it anymore, they're showing their age now and there are no replacements on the bench.

O' Driscoll's try showed a gaping hole in the aussie defense in the last minute though.

Interesting game in that Australia while clearly the better side could not put this one away. From an Irish standpoint it was great to see Ireland hang in there and not fade away in the last 10 mins. If ever a draw felt like a victory this was it for Ireland.

From an aussie point of view of course. :daydream:

still say that deans should have bitten the bullet and gone straight to pocock for capt. i know, young and not a lot of experience but he is the future of aussie rugby. has the potential to be better than mccaw and smith.

gits had a very poor game. didn't look interested. almost as if he is sulking or knows the writing on the wall. and if he had kicked straight, no problem. an easy win. aussies had so many chances but couldn't put ireland away and paid for it.

as for the lineout, seriously, we could not beat the seven dwarfs at the moment.

and kaplan's problem is that he genuinely believes that he is so important that people come to watch him. so he has to be doing things, whether right or wrong, and if stupid and incompetent, at least he is the centre of attention. i have been in airports post games and he waits until the last minute so a special call has to be made for him so everyone can hear his name. true!

they say players are happy if the ref is consistent. not if he is consistently incompetent. to even penalise palu for that tackle would have been a disgrace. to give him 10 minutes was beyond comprehension. until you remember that it is all about jonathan. what a tosser.

the problem is that the officials keep encouraging him by giving him good games to ref. send him off to do angola v luxembourg for a few years and he might learn.

especially as it was on at 2.

Given your problems working out the IPod and the concept of "contacts" in your phone.....I won't bother trying to explain Daylight Saving.

I stayed up until 4:30am to watch the French getting at the boks :P

But a Lusi '01, a bottle of Ron Mulata 7-year and a good match helped a lot :D
