Well, you know one of those “dreaded years”-shelf sitters.

Certainly not much “bling” there. The cigar speaks through personal qualities. An old ‘classic’ Upmann format. I had been lucky with these. Been able to acquire a few boxes still on primary market, and am quite enjoying them. Never have I had a construction issue. Nice, smooth Upmann wrappers. Well-made. They evolved into absolutely fine cigars, mild-medium to solid medium (occasionally up to medium-plus) today, with showing a nice evolution (as you’d expect from the format). But one should certainly look for a calm setting (preferably indoors) to fully appreciate the 1:30 to 1:50 h smoke. According to experts a rare cigar (am not so sure about this, while indeed, you get to see them rarely being smoked), yet it seemed to never fetch high prices secondary. Officially discontinued in 2002, but I think this very batch of 06/2000 had been the last produced, last exported (for I have never come across younger ones so far). So screw the ‘dreaded period’!

Sadly the draw was tight and I didn’t bring my PerfecDraw with me on the walk. Still plenty of strength but otherwise I struggle to pick up any nuances when the draw is like that.

LGC MdO 4 (2024)

Insanely flavorful. Very fresh yet so settled that you would think it has 10+ years of aging. Remarkable. 
 

Note: the band is the old one but the cigar box states 2024 and was very recently purchased from a reputable LCDH. Discussed this here. I started to suspect that this might be an old forgotten patch 😳.

Interesting that you note that. I had the same impression. From the cold aroma and in smoking they are certainly not rolled “yesterday”.

Also checked on the band – it’s the same print as in my 2002 No. 3, only the die-cut pattern is slightly different.

I had another “normal” box from 2023 from the same factory which is clearly still young. I know it’s a bit wild idea but who knows. 
 

You are right, the band is for the slimmer MdO 3, which is another strange thing. In anyway it’s the kind of cigar that drive you back to the vendor to buy a dozen of boxes (which sadly can’t happen).

Yeah, not implying cigars are old stock. But it wouldn’t be a first that there is a shortage in supply of special packaging (even outer cardboard, so I’ve heard). Therefore not highly unlikely that cigars sat for some ‘longer-than-usual’ time before being packed and shipped.
