Popular Post IanMcLean68
I would like to thank my FOH friends for a few excellent cigars smoked recently. 1. Punch 898 Firstly, thank you to @El Presidente for the very kind gift of a Punch 898 to sample, at the last Sydney FOH get together with you at Peppercorn in Sydney a few weeks back. Roasted nuts, peanut, chocolate note, sweet fudge character with lots of great citrus twang. Started medium but built in strength, some earthiness and spiciness developing and was medium full at the finish. Had a great even burn line on this one and a good draw throughout but the burn started going off, and I had some relighting issues throughout the second half, attributable to age, moisture content of the cigar, and the warm humid conditions in Sydney at the time. Definitely one of the most flavoursome RE's I've ever tried. Is going to be an absolute cracker in 3 years, but going on most PCC regional editions will be getting towards perfection in 5 years in my opinion. 2. Ramon Allones Small Club Coronas LMB DIC18 Thank you @Luca for this kind gift of a RASCC sampler. I don't know why I had never got around to trying them before. Enjoyed with an early morning coffee, I have to say I am mighty impressed for a cigar only 1 year old. Starts with classic RA flavours of stewed fruit/fruit toast and an earthy unsweetened chocolate similar to carob. A nice dose of pepper on the retrohale. Starts medium but very quickly ramps in body and strength. By the end of the first third it is medium full, leather and earth come into the mix and the pepper dissipates. The RA fruitiness stays until the final third which finishes with a wallop of strong espresso coffee. The last inch shows a little bitterness, a sign of its youth, but nothing to stop me nubbing this great little flavour bomb. Strong, smooth and satisfying. No rough edges. Like every other Cuban perla or minuto I have tried, a good, strong, true representation of its marca. Definitely box worthy and will be fantastic in 3-5 years in my opinion. Another short smoke to put on the radar. 3. Punch Coronas circa 2008 Thank you @Fuzz for this gift of a Punch Corona circa 2008. You gave this to me over a year ago, but it's taken me awhile to get around to smoking it, so your place for a BBQ seemed like the perfect setting. You did find the box code for me, went to the trouble of finding it in your stash on the day, and then I went and forgot to write it down! Another great corona this was, and a terrible shame this was discontinued back in 2009. As expected for a 10+ year old cigar, very creamy satin smooth cushion-y mouth coating smoke. Lots of roasted peanuts, toasty tobacco, some cloves, sweet spices. Becomes complex as the cigar progresses. So well balanced, complex, and smooth it is difficult to pin point flavours. Some earthy flavours and a rich malty stout note through the second third. Great draw and even burn that got better as the cigar progressed. Great cigar. I remember saying at the time that again this showed me that Punch is one of those marcas that ages extremely well for me. Also, I couldn't help showing it off perched atop Fuzz's Hotel Nacional ashtray that he acquired on his last trip to Havana. I'm so jealous Fuzz! 4. Montecristo Grand Edmundo LE 2010 Thank you again for the gift @Fuzz, an unexpected treat. And a treat it was! Enjoyed this during the same Sydney FOH get together after a fantastic BBQ lunch at Fuzz's place. Smoked this whilst watching the Russian slapping competitions on YouTube! What fun! Started all milk chocolate sweetness with a hint of dried raisins, smooth mouth coating creamy smoke just under medium bodied. Through the first third some floral notes are coming in and its tasting a bit like chocolate, dried fruit & turkish delight. Delicious. Past the first third, a complete transition occurs, with the chocolate dissipating completely, replaced by an array of sweet spices coming in and out, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom and a a core of fungal slightly earthy forest floor. Great sweet spicy retrohale. Continues like this through to the last third building in body, finishing with a lovely earthy coffee finish and just over medium bodied. Had a few relighting issues in the last third and put it down at an inch remaining, but I attribute that more the the warm humid weather for smoking such a large stick. Fantastic smoke! I'll give this one a 94. Had a great time. Thanks again Fuzz! 5. Trinidad Shorts Thanks again to @Luca for the gifted samplers! I wanted to try this and compare to the Cohiba Shorts. I have to say, very good! Like smoking doughnuts and coffee. Medium bodied. Loose draw and burned quickly but was not harsh or hot. Smooth and tasty. Is it as good as the Cohiba Shorts? Maybe not quite, not as complex, but close. If the aim was to make another high end Shorts format in the "other" premium marca Trinidad, to be up there with the Cohiba, then I would say HSA has succeeded. Like the Cohiba version, they again have nailed the marcas DNA. I enjoyed this. Thanks Luca!
