A giant sized thank you to my friend Elliot [mention=31951]SigmundChurchill[/mention]. Elliot, no bs, you're everything that's right about friends and cigars. Thank you for your generosity! Today marks my 43rd birthday! I'm celebrating with family tonight. Again, which is awesome! But before dinner I'm putting down this gem. Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas. Chasing with some Macallan 15, an espresso in an hour maybe, and seltzer is handy nearby to cleanse the palate. Snack is a Cuban pastry made from sweet potatoes. Aren't we lucky?! Quite mild bodied, the main flavour I get from this is tea, with rich tea biscuits! Not hugely complex and not much evolution, but a nice ‘straight’ smoke. Perhaps a little ashy-tasting towards the end. Recent Hoyos aren't really my cup of tea, so I'm probably not the best judge. Typical Hoyo flavors, then it seemed to devolve into charred wood in the final third. If you can recall, we had the option to get the darker wrappered or lighter wrappered ERdM Choix Supreme. Our forum members were split 50/50 down the middle. I opted for the lighter wrapper. El Pres recommends to rest these for 30 to 60 days after you get them young and then dry box for a few days. This is sound advice. The El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme is best enjoyed at around mild-medium and under in strength and with subtle flavours, after all, it's a lighter cigar in the Habanos catalogue. This had the quintessential ERdM shortbread and honey with some almond nut and a lovely citrus tang throughout which kept the cigar flavoursome and interesting for me. In comparison to older ERdM Choix Supreme I've had, the almond nuttiness was not as evident and older ones can become more creamy, which is when they reach their peak according to my preference. 25 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
