Popular Post JohnS Posted July 11, 2019 Popular Post Posted July 11, 2019 Partagás Lusitanias UEB Jun 2018 The Partagas Lusitanias is perhaps up there as one of my very favourite Partagas vitolas, it's just a pity I don't smoke them too often. The reason? Simply because they take a minimum of 2 hours to smoke! This 'Lusi' was picked up in a quarter pack offering from a 24:24 listing this year. I was both surprised and pleased how 'colorado red' the wrappers were on each of these, so I let them rest and today was the day to try one out. This cigar was interesting to say the least. It wasn't the flavours as they were quite satisfactory. Partagas sourdough, milk coffee, leather, a little paprika spice and caramel-like sweetness (what El Pres lists as nougat) was evident throughout, rather it was the ash. You see, a standard cigar will burn around the ligero leaves in the centre, that is if it's larger than around 38 ring gauge and it contains ligero leaves, and in doing so it will leave a slight cone shape as the ash drops signifying that the seco and volado leaves around the core burn quicker and hence drop off accordingly. Sometimes a well-constructed cigar will ash off in seemingly perfect inch-long cylindrical tufts, this cigar just ashed as it went. The ash was never longer than 1/3 to a 1/2 inch in length, and this only happened 2 or 3 times, usually the cigar flaked white ash, yet flavour-wise it was fine. What causes this phenomenon? There are two reasons mainly; one, the minerality in the soil of the leaves used was higher than normal or two, the ligero leaf in the centre was not rolled into the core correctly. If it was the second reason then you are likely to find some tunneling going on as you go, but this wasn't the case. No matter, I enjoyed this Lusitanias and I hope to smoke another when I get the opportunity. 25 1

Popular Post RDB Posted July 12, 2019 Popular Post Posted July 12, 2019 This was interesting: my first SLR Regio, from a PSP six pack LAT DIC 18. Rich colorado colour and very nice appearance. The first third was amazing! Outrageously fruity: apricot jam, hints of red fruit and vanilla, really compelling flavours. Then quite abruptly I lost all that. The body built significantly, from light to medium, and a peppery taste started to obscure everything else. Some richness yes, but the flavours pretty much stopped being interesting and I put it down halfway. Now, this is clearly a baby, and it had just 30 days’ rest after travel. I am guessing these just need more time to shine. That first third was great. 16

Popular Post JohnS Posted July 12, 2019 Popular Post Posted July 12, 2019 Ramón Allones Gigantes ABO Ene 2019 The Ramon Allones Gigantes represents a Habanos vitola of which there are only four left. At 49 ring gauge x 194 millimetres in length (or 7.6 inches), this Double Corona requires a minimum of 2 hours to smoke. They always seem mild in strength to me when invariably I find the time to smoke one, they definitely are never medium to medium-full. However, together with the Partagas Lusitanias, Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona and Punch Double Corona, they represent a vitola that, unlike Lonsdales and Churchills, hasn't been depleted completely in the last 20 years or so. Still, this hasn't stopped recent rumours circulating that the Gigantes is on the way out. Maybe the Vegas Robaina Don Alejandro and Saint Luis Rey Double Corona's discontinuations has fueled such speculation? I certainly hope not, yet time will tell. This Gigantes started off really well. There was a beautiful balance of cocoa, light coffee and stewed fruit flavours, but as the cigar reached the end of the first third, the fruit flavours dissipated and the cocoa flavour dominated. I put this down to its youthfulness, those pleasant fruity flavours are there, they just need more time down to express themselves in the future. In comparison to aged RA Gigantes I've had in the past, this cigar was definitely in need of more rest as with significant aging (think something like 10 years) they develop a wondrous baking spice that marries well with the cocoa and fruit flavours. The construction on this was perfect, however. The ash dropped off in one inch lots each time, the burn was consistent, there were no touch-ups and the draw was spot on too. I know I need to rest these longer but I'm still tempted to see how the next one is from the same box code. Perhaps we'll see in six months or so. 25

Looking forward and excited to the box of these (same box code) I bought from our host in a 24:24. The box is currently in route. Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comments. I wisely put my box away in one of my coolidors for at least 5 years. BTW gorgeous wrapper on that RAG. 3 1

Popular Post Thirds Posted July 13, 2019 Popular Post Posted July 13, 2019 2018 Mag 46 from singles in the store. Have several of these and won’t touch for a while. Found it to be ??? It put off a great aroma but the flavors were muted and singular. Chalk it up to youth? I’m very new to CCs but I’ve now tried Mag 54, Mag 46, No 2 and Connie A and so far Upmann just does nothing for me. They are all young Upmanns so maybe I need to leave them alone for some time? I just don’t get any flavor profile as others have described. Is it possible my palate just doesn’t taste the flavors of an entire marca? Should I leave them to rest for a considerable amount of time? Dry box longer? Store lower/higher humidity? Appreciate the feedback or any similar experiences with Upmann or an entire marca. Thanks, vets! 17
Popular Post Deeg Posted July 13, 2019 Popular Post Posted July 13, 2019 C & C time! PSP PLPC from July '17 (UEB I think). I needed to reset my PL mojo after getting a box of PLMCs I was hoping would be great right away, but the wrappers were mottled maduro - gorgeous but they'll need the full Rip Van Winkle treatment. The first one of these I smoked ROTT was a tent peg - no draw, no flavor. But a few weeks rest and a few days in the drybox has done its job. This was a joy to smoke - twangy, citrus, coffee, honey. As usual the challenge here is going to be letting these age long enough. 20
