hellring Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 For a great barbecue experience in Manhattan I recommend Blue Smoke 116 E. 27th St.
First Lady Posted June 18, 2009 Author Posted June 18, 2009 Thanks Guys :-) Wish I was there this weekend
log1k Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 You better be coming before the year is over!!! I need a hug! shhhhhhhhhhhh
patrick Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 For Chinese try Wo Hops in China town. It's cash only and you need to eat downstairs. Do not eat upstairs!!! Some of the best Chinese food that I ever had, except for the dumplings. 17 Mott St., New York, NY 10002 212-962-8617
jeromeroselli Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I have to admit, I moved out of NYC because I genuinely just couldn't stand living there anymore. But while I was there, the one thing I enjoyed most was the food. I'm a self proclaimed foodie. Part of my job was literally to eat out. I'll list my favorite restaurants in no particular order. You can take it from me that these recommendations will not let you down. Lisa, feel free to send me a personal email for more information on each place. 1. Steak Frites in the meat packing district Hands down the best steak and fries you'll ever eat in your life. I may have ordered the signature steak frites dish close to 15 separate occasions 2. "Blue smoke" High end, BBQ NYC style. Your friend will not be disappointed. Then there is Virgils, arguably the best, and if your friend is brave "Dinosaur BBQ" in Harlem might be the best BBQ outside of texas. 3. Dos Caminos/Rosa Mexicano (Mexican) Order a Margarita at Dos Caminos. 4. Do Not let your friend leave NYC without getting a slice of Bleecker street pizza OR John's Pizza on Bleecker street. While on Bleecker street, check out "The Peculier Pub" and have one of their liter size beers from their menu of 400 from around the world, and order a cheeseburger and an order of the "House Fries". 5. Arturo's OR Lupa, Both are hands down my favorite Italian places. They are right next to each other on Thompson + West Houston in Greenwich Village. Make reservations at Lupa in advance, or be prepared to wait around for an available table. It happens. It's also not very expensive. I recommend the Gnocchi. 6. Steak I second Sparks, but if your friend is gonna eat a steak in NYC, don't even bother. Take a cab to Peter Luger's in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The porterhouse for 2 has been known to make people lose consciousness. 7. Crif Dogs in the east village makes a very fun and delicious hot dog. Fun when out on the town in the wee hours of the morning. I hope that helps. Believe me, I have a lot of passion and money invested in every one of these recommendations. Lol. If your friend wants any other ideas, such as Greek, Sushi/Asian, American, French, Bars, please let me know. I can get a little more specific and provide some addresses as well. Jeremy

The food in NYC is literally one of the only reasons I stayed as long as I did.
aavkk Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Jerome laid out some excellent options. I will add just a few to the list. For Italian, its very difficult to beat Babbo. Personally, Ive been there twice and each was just spectacular. If you want great Sushi check out Blue Ribbon. For great cheap eats, a little hole in the wall on the Lower East side called "caracas" is the way to go. Brilliant venezuelan arepas with great fresh ingrediants. Its my favorite spot to bring guests to the city and are on a budget.
jeromeroselli Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 It's the little tapas joints like Caracas that really make NYC the best place to eat in the world.

Norma's is the best brunch in the city but you have to get reservations NOW. Its harder to get a table here than anywhere else on the list IMO. For dessert I personally feel that Serendipity is a tourist trap that doesnt deliver the goods. Veniero's however, this place is rediculously good. Be sure to try the strawberry shortcake. A good friend of mine, Tom Wicus is the bar manager at Bond Street. Tell him I sent you and he will take care of you Personally, I think you get the same steak at Wolfgangs as Luger's but you'll get better side dishes at wolfgangs in a better setting.
jeromeroselli Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 See, NY is so big and the food is so good that you can literally choose where you eat by neighborhood and really be at the same level. I was a downtown guy living in the village so I traditionally ate at mostly downtown restaurants. It's sort of fun to travel around the city and not stay in one particular place. Also, all of these recommendations aren't going to help your friend. Maybe we can come up with a list of what we all think is the best so there is something that can actually be useful. We've recommended every pizza place, every bbq place, every good steak joint and italian restaurant. I guess the bottom line is don't go to the olive garden in time square or Sbarro's on Canal and you'll be okay.
