ChicagoWhiteSox Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Hey guys, I am usually a lurker here, But I figured this place needed a craft beer thread. Just a thread to talk about your favorite beer and maybe give a reivew or two. I am interested to learn about craft beer outside of the U.S. Well, Anyone ever try Three Floyds? Ive only had their alpha king, but it was killer! Their dark lord is a legend.
Colt45 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Interesting - I was thinking about this a week or so ago, after reading an article in the most recent CA. I've had quite a few "craft" beers, and really do not have any faves. In my opinion (and it's simply my opinion), craft does not always equate to better beer. Very generally speaking I find that in an effort to be "different", smaller brewers often miss the mark - too sweet, too fruity, to thick, etc. This is not to say that these type of beverages do not have their place, but in general, I like my beer to be crisp, flavorful, and in balance. A few weeks back, I met up with a good friend at a brew pub, and I tried a number of their different offerings. While good enough, none of them really made me want to give up on drinking Sam Adams. I guess SA is still consodered craft, even though they contract out and brew very little of their own beer. When I want home town, I go with Harpoon. There's a bottle of Harpoon Summer with my name on it now.
ChicagoWhiteSox Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 Have you had anything from Bar Harbor?
Colt45 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Have you had anything from Bar Harbor? I don't recall exactly, but I think I may have tried the Lighthouse Ale.
ChicagoWhiteSox Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 I don't recall exactly, but I think I may have tried the Lighthouse Ale. New England has some great breweries. Ive never had any bar harbor either. DFH and SA are really the only east coast beer I can get on a regular basis.

I've tried a number of the Dogfish beers. Again, don't get me wrong, I think many micros do very good work. I just like my ale to taste like ale, my lager lager, etc.

Something consitantly good from the east that is balanced other than SA? Dont get me wrong, SA has a place in my heart
Morientes50 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I can recommend Rogue beer. The whole line is excellent but I esp. like the nutbrown ale and the Dead guy ale. Rogue is generally considered at the top of the Craft beer producers.
perfectform Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Living in California, and more specifically, southern CA, I have had an opportunity to try a nearly endless list of some of the best beers in the world. Hard to pick a favorite, but I really love IPA, Imperial Stouts (great with a cigar) and sour beers. 3F is a good brewery, my favorite from them being the Dark Lord, BA Dark Lord, and the Dreadnaught IPA. The Black Sun Stout is very good as well. Tons of flavor in only a 5.5% ABV stout isn't bad at all.

rsrinivasan Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Thanks to you guys for talking about Rogue. I always saw it in the local liquor store but never pulled the trigger. Love all the Rogue beers I've tried in the past few weeks, esp the Hazelnut Brown. I've tried it with a bunch of cigars, overpowered a few with the nut taste, but there were a few that it matched perfectly with.
bassman Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 They won't make it again until the fall, but Bell's Brewery Expidition Stout is heavenly if you like a rich malty beer. The daughter of one of the guitarists I play with makes her own beer. So far the dunkel weiss, maple & honey beers have been winners. Rasberry not so good!
Smoke_Eater Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 It must be nice drinking Anchor Steam everyday! I went on a tour of their brewery about a year ago. Highly recommend it if you're ever in San Francisco. A lot of history behind Anchor Steam. They also make whisky & Gin although you cannot sample them at the brewery. Great beers! I also would recommend trying any Lost Abbey beers. They're located in San Diego. I went to their annual Angel's Share release a couple years ago. Great beers too!
trumpetchris Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Dogfish Head- Delaware: Any Stone- San Diego: Ruination IPA Rogue- N. California: Any Sierra Nevada: Fantastic beers of the couple I've tried Mmm fancy beer.
urs Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I love craft beers. My favorite breweries are Three Floyds, Half Acre, Goose Island, Bells, Rogue, Unibroue, and Dogfish head. So tasty
Alberto_Magnus Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 This topic is great. A Swedish friend of mine has just been to the US, state of Washington, and was amazed at the quality of craft beers from small breweries, he told me they were just great. And a Swede knows his beers ) Looking forward to trying them. Any US member could give me a tip about how to order a sample of these? That is, a retailer delivering to Europe with reasonable prices.
