Dr.G Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Hi all, This is the last of the cigars my sister brought me back from Cuba in January this year. A 2007 RYJ Churchill tubo. Setting: nice Summer Saturday afternoon, watching the cricket (that's like baseball for non-Aussies! ). Accompanied by a Boag's St. George beer. Construction: beautiful Churchill, a bit veiny though, no lumps detected. Aroma at cold: clean tobacco, some tea leaves and a hint of cedar (likely due to the tube) Pre-light draw: very good draw, spicy and a little cocoa. Opening: gob fulls of smoke, herby, full of nuts and cream. Very promising. Even our new 'hound', Lucy the Whippet came to inspect. Maybe it was the peanut butter-smell of the smoke luring her to the Man Room. First 1/3: nutty flavours, I think hazelnuts? with hints of cedar. Enjoyable; medium body. Second 1/3: more muted, some cream more so than nuts, some leather undertones coming through Final 1/3: nuts return, draw tightening up, developing some espresso notes but way too little too late, some tannins as well. Overall: a bit disappointing. The burn was pretty good, only requiring one touch up, but the ash was very friable. It started out really promising, but didn't deliver a great journey that one hopes for from longer vitolas; it didn't blow my frock up. Maybe low to mid 80s. Cheers, George
WYPirate Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Very, very nice review George! And "Friable" is not a word I have heard associated with cigars before, and a good choice at that!
Fatshotbud Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Thanks for the review - I have some of these tucked away but don't know code/yr. With the exception of Short Churchills, I am not a big RyJ fan anyway just like to keep a few in stock. The only other large RyJ I have smoked were the Hermosos 1&2 and they took their time getting ripe so, I will cross my fingers for these to improve too. PS - nice pics and nice looking pup!
