1997 Ramon Allones Corona

I picked up a couple singles of this much lauded vitola about a year ago. After smoking a very disappointing example that had a very, very tough draw last summer, I decided to revisit this cigar last week.

This particular example was sort of mean looking. The wrapper, while sporting an overall attractive appearance, was a little veiny, mildly rough and even had a couple bumps. It's hard to describe, but it was one of those "nasty in a good way" looking wrappers. The cigar felt hard as a rock so I was a little bit scared. However, I clipped the cap and the draw was beautiful. On the prelight there was a sweetness accompanied by a cedary, substantive mouthfeel. Expectations soared.

Fired it up and expectations were met The first few draws were incredibly strong. Notes of complex woods and the signature RA spice profile were dialed up to 11. The smoke was plentiful and luxuriously smooth, making for a mouthfeel that was creamy, rich, and easy. As the cigar progressed, the strength remained and at times even increased! By the halfway point, the nicotine and strength started to overwhelm the higher notes, but the base of strong woods with the balance of a honey chocolate sweetness remained.

This wasn't one of those cigars that changes a lot as it burns down. There is more of a subtle evolution of the flavor profile until the point where the strength slaps the back of your hand for dipping into the cookie jar too early. Despite 11 solid years of age, it's obvious that this blend was built to go a considerably longer distance. With only 2 left, I'll never find out

Wow, what a great review. This is a cigar that I would love to try but will almost definitely never have access to.

I have a single from 96 that I have been saving and have just not brought myself to pick it up from the humidor. It sleeps for yet another day. The others were as tasteful as any other aged RA has been for me; sweet spice, stewed fruit, leather and spiced wood, balanced and delicious!
