shrink Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 "The Cookie Monster" The example I selected looked just like a Hoyo Epi is supposed to look. A nice, golden brown wrapper, very lightly oiled and dry to the touch. Prelight scents of spice and cocoa. Firm between the fingers, and a bit light in the hand, which led me to wonder if the draw might be a bit loose. But fortunately, when lit, it had just the right amount of resistance, and a good even burn. I always look forward to smoking from this particular cab. One of my favorite cigars, and arguably my favorite Hoyo, the venerable Hoyomide EL notwithstanding. This was quite a strong cigar when young. And the years have been nothing but kind to it. So, what do we have after a few years of aging under ideal conditions? The first few draws of my corona gorda were impressively rich, and surprisingly robust, with a flavor profile that immediately reminded me of a spicy chocolate chip cookie. If you can imagine a chocolate chip cookie laced with crushed black peppercorns. The peppery elements, once quite sharp, were mellowed and blended perfectly into the overall profile. They added depth and duration to the spicy, sweet flavor that persisted long after each exhalation. I would not describe the profile as being classically "woody". Unless by that you mean the cigar could give you a woody. Then, it just might qualify. When I say chocolate chip cookie, I’m not talking just any cookie. All the elements were there in spades: a toasty baked core, with bittersweet cocoa chips that melt in the mouth, and walnut meats to boot. You know how walnuts are slightly sweet, but leave an astringent taste on the tongue? The only other cigar that recalls this profile is the Hoyo Regalos EL, but these are still much too young, with unresolved flavors and a lingering citrus finish that spoils the cookie fantasy. Still, it is easy to imagine that the Regalos will mature to resemble this delectable confection. If so, we have quite a classic in store. By the final third, my muscular Epicure was almost too strong. How strong? Well, how about a peppery Partagas Serie D No. 4 of similar age? And still showing plenty enough pepper and immature tannins to bode well for at least another few years in the humidor. I refuse to smoke another for at least a year, I pledge. Oh, how I wish I had a few more cabs like this. Where, or where can they be? So what’s the final verdict? Great now, with unlimited potential. A full-bodied 94. All you Hoyo haters out there, eat your hearts out! With chocolate chip cookies, no less.
