Dave Kuck Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 I have five Saint Luis Rey Churchills left from 1998. To my surprise when I opened the box they smelled musty-almost gassy. I quickly opened and smelled my other cigars and they smelled fine. However I did notice a musty smell in my humidor-slight-not overpowering. I did change the wick in my system-a Digital Cabinet System"Set & Forget" Monitor by CMT about three months ago and cleaned it with water. Should I scub the container that holds water with bleach and let it dry???-or do humidors get a little musty??? Are my Saint Luis Rey Churchills simply past their prime. Please help. Also-I seldom open my humidor-sometimes for three or four weeks. Should a humidor be opened once a week or so to get in fresh air??? dave kuck :-( My humidor is the size of an end table-created for me by Aristocrat Humidors.
El Presidente Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 Dave. More than likely your humidifier is being blown directly onto or near the SLR Churchills which is causing them effectively to rot. Check your humidification and fan setup. Also calibrate your spare analogue hygrometer and run a test as to what the true humidity reading is. Check back with us tomorrow ;-)

It's a good idea to open your humi once a week to let out "the gases".

Freefallguy Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I’m with Rum, you’ve got to be cracking the top a bit more Dave. However, now that you’re trying to clean it up, use good strong vodka to wipe it down. It knocks out the mold and imparts less of the unfavorable toxins than bleach. Of course, use only Grey Goose!
rumrogue Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Pardon me mate but........ you only open your humidor once every 3-4 weeks! That is criminal! Abuse of Cuba's finest! No wonder they are rotting away. They have to be conversed with & stroked DAILY. Shown love & understanding daily. Demonstrations of care, love & nurture almost hourly. Then they'll come back to you & reward you for all that valuable time bestowed on their welfare. Then you can set fire to the little buggers!
