Think I would have enjoyed the last third as lawn bowls is one of the few things that I think I'll get to enjoy should I retire.

Never played it down the bowls club (About 30 years too young), but always envied those FOG. They always seem to be having such a good time, barby going during hot weather, gently enjoying a few too many drinks, fraternising with the opposite sex (and when the wife complains - play the dementure card), raucous laughter etc. At least where I live, they look like they're having a whale of a time.

Great game to play Graham and in fact local FOH member Dean Merlo was local district club champion last year. I really enjoy rolling a few ends.

Watching a game is another thing entirely :-D

Thank you for the review, albeit a disappointing one. The Lunch Club has long been one of my favorite light/small cigars and I'm sad to hear that this range is not performing.

Do you get the impression that these have the materials to develop, Rob?

I wouldn't back this box to develop into anything worthwhile. I agree with you in that it has been very good in the past. Unfortunately this one did not pass muster.

Ahhh... just ordered a box too. Hopefully this was a bad month/year/you name it and my box will be great. Although I ordered the box as I hadn't seen it reviewed or talked about recently and thought it might be a hidden gem.

heres to hoping.

More than likely just a dud sigle from an average box.

Please do me a favour. Wait 30 days upon receipt and post a follow up review. I suspect it will be far different ;-)

I will do that, i've never taken the time to write a review and this would be a great time for one.

Much appreciated. The wider the pool of reviews the better.

Of course, I couldn't wait to sample these, and I encountered much of the same as you. I will wait the 30 days for a real review, but the 30 hours i gave them of quality humidor time was enough for a little tasting, and i can tell they won't amount to much, but the tobacco was clean, draw good, and overall pretty good cigar, minus the complexity. We'll see again in 29 days, give or take, upon my review. (Same box code and month received, UAS ABR 07)

This would surprise me to see them turn into something great, but for now i'm guessing no one would give these (atleast this specific box code/year) more than 86/100 given any resting period. Not to say it wasn't enjoyable. It was good old cuban tobacco.

I sampled two of these two review, one to try box and one for immediate smoking. This review will be rather short.

Non-dry boxed cigar: after having to relight 5 times on a cigar this small i gave up. Overall I was unimpressed, i've had a few others before this and the rolling is so inconsistant I can't believe these were ever popular. (humidor is at 66-67% constant)

Dry boxed (about 27 hours or 28): Only one relight, but the draw on this cigar was tight. Isn't that the opposite of what dry boxing is supposed to produce? Another thing to note is that the tobacco was much stronger and flavor much flatter.

I'm not sure what will happen to the rest of the box, they're small enough to let sit for a year at a time to keep sampling, but i fear this box is a dud.

El Rey Del Mundo Lunch Club UAS ABR 07

This must have been a special “boomerang” release for Australia ….given the obvious bend.

Another rather plain Jane ERDM and again from that 2nd quarter 07 period of which I haven’t had much luck with in this series of tastings. While sporting a look only a mother could love, the aroma at cold was enticing enough showing some tea and tobacco while the construction felt fine once the obvious imperfection was overlooked. The wrapper appeared soulless with no oil and a sandpapery feel to the touch.

I have had some very good “Lunch Clubs” over the years. On a hot summers day I have often reached for this cigar as a mid morning first for the day.

Clipped the cap and received clean tobacco flavours from a near perfect draw.

Fired up the foot and there were plenty of pure tobacco flavours with a charry edge that disappeared within a few minutes to be replaced by hints of light milk coffee. Body is light medium with no pepper spice when the smoke is purged through the nose. So far a reasonable cigar but one which needs to develop something quickly if it intends to lift itself above the level of bog average.

This cigar is going through the motions. It is a simple cigar of simple flavours. It appears reticent to take a stand. At the end of the first third I have simple tobacco flavours, a little milk coffee, some cedar and not a whole lot more. If it is going to maintain this light/medium body it really needs a little more spice complexity be it sweet or sour. Right now it is a base model Hyundai…..does the job but you wouldn’t look forward to jumping in it.

Disappointment rising towards the end of the second third. The plot of this cigar is not developing. Slightly fuller in body but as complex as a bar blonde. This is such a shame as I recall so many great ERDM Lunch Club and if I remember correctly they were a favourite of Smithy when he was here (confirmed by the number missing from our quarterly stock count).

The last inch produced a little pepper but all in all it was akin to watching lawn bowls. You know someone would appreciate it but you wish you were somewhere else.
