I spent an extended weekend at a beautiful resort in northern Minnesota. Enjoyed making boat drinks (rum runners and strawberry daiquiris) with a bottle of Havana Club Anejo Especial. But the highlight of the weekend was grilling 12 oz New York Strips and opening up a bottle of 2005 Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. What a spectacular Napa Cab! Beautiful silky tannins, fig, blackberry and cassis fruit notes and an unusual spicy kick of some oak, mocha and even a touch of caramel. I've had Cakebread one other time and it's consistently excellent year after year. Had a piece of death by chocolate for dessert, which also held up to the last bit of wine. We finished the night with H. Upmann Sir Winstons on the deck. Could not have had a better weekend!

Cakebread is my wife's favorite cab .We visited many years ago and picked up some of their reserves. Yum.

I am not sure what could be better than a good cab, a good steak, a good desert and a good cigar. Sounds like you are treating yourself right!

Sounds like a terrific night! In my opinion, chocolate and red wine are one of the world's great

food combinations. Though I'm not the biggest fan of big Cal cabs, I've been able to try this

a few times, and agree that it is consistently well made.

» An XLNT Cab for sure but drinking an 05 in 08 is kind of a waste.

» Glad ya liked it. X:-P

In a lot of ways I agree with you, but the Cakebread was very approachable now. It certainly would get better with age, but I certainly didn't think the tannins were too tight or the wine was off in the least.
