SmokinAl Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Oh dear. I’m having a good laugh at myself right now. I had intended to write a few words about the humidor to explain what I’d done, but seems I may have been a little distracted (read pssst). The humidor doesn’t have a lock. A customer of mine ages ago when asked about what he’d like for a lock said “None, I want my friends to smoke my cigars”. I liked that idea so much that I’ve tried to adopt it ever since. I’ve also shied away from handles on the sides as I’d prefer the owner to feel the wood when it’s lifted. The base gives a convenient grip for lifting. This box is too large to be used for serving anyway. Whilst I had planned to fully choke the finish, I held off. The veneer is Desert Redgum and I thought it should have some character so I have left some of the grain visible. This is a real desert wood from the Australian Outback; a gnarled and rough tree that is as tough as its environment. It just seemed appropriate. I meant to post a photo clearly showing the dividers in the top shelf and how they work. I’ll make up for it now. As with all my work, it has a life time warranty. That’s my lifetime and hopefully my son’s lifetime if he takes up the cause. In the unlikely event that you should have a problem with the box or any questions you can email me direct at [email protected] This humidor whilst similar to others I have made is unique in dimensions and woods used. The Cohiba Indian Head is also a first that I doubt I’ll repeat. There’s also a few other bloody things I doubt I’ll do again, like writing a 20,000 word tutorial or using commercial veneers, but we live, we learn :-) The Hang Ten has been conditioned and in use for the past few weeks. Once the new owner receives it the only thing left to do is charge the tray in the bottom with a little distilled water and they’re set. Depending on climate, this servicing should only be required every two or so months. I must give a big shout out to Mark at www.cigarmony.com for his kind donation of humectants to the project. Warren, the work that Rob and you did is, I think, the single most important part of this box. I would have loved to have more members involved in its construction. Thank you both again. Claudius, you are of course right. I was going to donate those cigars, but they’re way too ugly so I’ll just have to smoke them myself. Thanks for the reminder. Yossie, it’s both my hobby and my business. You can’t find a better job than that. To all the rest of you, thank you for your kind words and support. Cheers and thanks again, Al

I’ll be delivering this over to Rob in the next few days for him to kick off the auction. To give you all an indication of what to expect, the material cost was a little over $800.00: Spanish Cedar: $160.00 Paduak Edging and Base: $200.00 Mahogany Drawer: $50.00 Veneers: $200.00 Hinges and Hinge Template: $220.00 I wish you all the very best of luck and I hope the winner gets as much pleasure from The Hang Ten Humidor as I did in building it for them. Cheers, Al Would love to see the [since removed from this page, and even google cache and the wayback machine] the pictures of this build, if you still have them. Also - is this the very same Alain who used to post under the moniker "Cubanismo" on CA Forums? If so, shoot me a pm. We met each other in dc for a smoke ~15 years ago, and I'd love to reconnect. 1
