habanohal Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I would half to say H. Upmann Mag 50. Georgious day today . 68 and not a cloud in the sky. So you would think ....hey i ll have a cigar and actually sit and enjoy it. Well, not this one.No flavor, no taste,no nothing. Tasted like your average $.99 Gara vega

brian1 Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Monte C EL 2003. Still hasnt turned and I dont think they will.
IShotAManInReno Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 RyJ Hermoso No. 1 EL 2003 I loved the RyJ Robusto EL 2001 - one of the best cigars I'd ever had. So I didn't hesitate to buy a box of the Hermoso No. 1 when they came out in 2003. What a waste. To this day they remain flat, bland and just plain boring.
jdbrown Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Hal, I was gifted a few last year and I had seen good reviews at first. I have not smoked one yet. Have they taken a turn downward from when they first were introduced?

Upmans need more time than most but I am also sceptical. Hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Tampa1257 Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Regular Thin Gauge Habanos have been smoking great! Can we say Forgetaboutit to EL's?? The vast majority of cigar smokers do not have the ability to store a box of cigars for 5-10 years hoping that they come around. EL's IMHO have had their opportunity, provided retailers the volume and profit needed, but frankly, it is time to move on. Edicion Limitada's are old and unfortunately SAD news. Next!
avid toker Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 2004 HdM Epicure Especial...a real let down to date.
habanohal Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 » 2004 HdM Epicure Especial...a real let down to date. I actually opened another box of these and they are truley very good. Also popped open a box of HDM Pyramids which are only so so. Now the Monte Cs, to me have gotten delicious. But the Monty Ds going through a phase now. I had high hopes when Upmanns came out or even when I heard they were but even fresh, they never smoked well. Still taste as nasty as the day I got them

As Pres noted, Upmanns need a long time to mature.
jdbrown Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Tampa, Looks like the German market is listening as far as Regional Release. They have a Bolivar Panetela and Bolivar Delicados on the plate for 2009. Regular thin ring production is superb!
kyee Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I actually really like the Mag 50's I've smoked so far. And as for the 2004 HdM Epicure Especial, those have a really distinctive "sweet" taste that I enjoy. Like they say, different strokes for different folks...
Ken Gargett Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 think even mag 46's ned at last 18 months so still hope. monte C's by far and away the worst of the LE's. bland, dull and gives compost a bad name. disagree with tampa. if we accept that not all LE's are superstars and they certainly are not, there are some gems. partagas pyramides, hoyo pyramides, cohiba sublimes, DC's and the recent pyamides etc. they make continuing the line worthwhile.
bassman Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Glad I passed on the Monte Cs & Mag 50s. (The latter was easy, as I don't like Mag 46s) The Hoyo Piramides were spectacular the first couple years, but have evolved into a rather bland cigar. Sometimes it's better to smoke them fresh. Monte D is a good cigar, but 06 & later Monte #1s are better & much cheaper.
Mike33 Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I have found the Mag 50's to be lackluster. I am surprised though at the number of people on this thread who dislike them....I always thought I was the only one who didn't care for them. All the ones I have smoked significant quantities of, I have enjoyed (Cohiba Piramide, Partagas SD#3 '06, Trini Ingenios, Partagas Piramide, and RyJ Hermoso #2).

This may be the greatest tragedy in all of "EL-dom". The Mag 50 is not far behind. Perhaps the Mag, in contrast to the Hoyomide, will have started bland and finish like a champ.

Left 15 to mature and much to my regret the greatness has degraded to mediocrity. Not my biggest waste though, I paid considerably more for the Cohiba Piramides ELs and they were a disappointment from day one. I can only hope they gain when aged.
