vegard_dino Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Hi all Got my first cigar sampler today, thanks for all the replys on that one. The new humidor was nice to, not a bif one, but ok for a max of 50 cigars I was told. Nice wood, ceder on the inside. The cigars arived in good condition, all in zipp lock bags. But, now, do I take the cigars out and putt them in the humidor? Or do I need to "wash" the inside of the humidor with wather, before putting the cigars in? The humidor also got a small plastic container, a humidifier I guess its called. Thanks for all help. Have a good day
SmokinAl Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 G'day, I'd suggest conditioning the humidor first. Use distilled water or de-mineralised water from a supermarket. Put a shot glass full into the humidor and leave it for a few days. Does the plastic humidifier you got have green foam inside it or little crystal beads? If it's foam, charge it with a 50/50 mix of the distilled water and Propylene Glycol which you can get from a chemist. If the humidifier has beads, put in a teaspoon or two of distilled water only. Pu your new cigars into a plastic airtight container with the humidifier for a few days while you wait for the humidor to condition. Then transfer them into the humidor. Any questions, feel free to ask. Cheers, Al.

You will need to season the interior of the humidor by moistening with either a clean rag of best is a spray bottle. Make sure you use distilled water. As for the plastic container I soak mine with 50% distilled water and 50% humidor solution. I'm not sure of the technical name but when the two liquid combine they keep the humidor at a constant 70% humidity. I would suggest you season first for 24 hrs then soak the humidifier when you put the cigars in. Hope it goes well.
bobsled Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Congrats on the Humi, its a slippery slope you have embarked upon!!!! Definitely season the humi first, they can take a while to stabilize. Check out beads at cigarmony or heartfelt industries. They give you more options for RH % :-P

If one do not use distilled water, I guess the wather add taste/smell to the cigars? Thanks

Thanks for the reply and good information. Yes, I think I am not stoping with one humidor. Was told that the best is to have a large one, or even better to have 2-3 small ones with the cigars you like in separate rooms or humidors. So, aaa, , need to get me one more. The shop I di dget if all from was great, if anyone like to give them a try here is the link: Removed per FOH Rules by Tampa1257 They may not got the best selections of cigars, but it was all I needed for starting.
Colt45 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 » If one do not use distilled water, I guess the wather add taste/smell to » the cigars? That is possible. Also, depending on the water quality, the minerals / chemicals in the water can clog the humidifier element, causing mold, calcification, etc.
Tampa1257 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 It is VERY IMPORTANT to ONLY use DISTILLED WATER. Period, nothing else will work correctly. I would suggest that you check out www.Cigarmony.com for a "Puck" which is a precision RH humidity control system for your humidor. It is also important that you "Season" your humidor correctly before you place your cigars inside. Again, ONLY use Distilled water in this process. The "seasoning process" typically takes about 3 days to properly season.

Thanks for the link!
aavkk Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I can say from experience that the beads are absolutely the only way to go. Forget about any foam humidity solutions, they are all garbage and more of a hassle than anything else. I second the votes to get a puck or two and have a worry free solution. Good luck.
