56Tweed Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Nice review. I smoked a single at lunch with a friend shortly after they were released and was blown away by it. One of maybe three young cigars that really left a strong impression with me. Hopefully I can keep my hands off of the cab. :-P
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Bolivar Simones Regional Release Canada 2007 48 x 127 (5.0") Hermosos No.44 We received a few cabs of 50 in a few weeks ago which have already gone. I wasn't sure whether to keep one of the cabs for myself so I picked the worst looking cab and selected the first single off the wheel to try and to complete a review. The Simones felt tight to the touch and a tad wet. Very nice barnyard aroma at cold which had the right amount of decadence. The wrapper felt oily and a little damp to the touch. To be honest I did not know which proportion was which. I know these cigars were stored with PCC's Canada operations and then shipped to Hong Kong and then onforwarded to Australia. Storage conditions would have been very different and in retrospect I am a moron for not letting this cigar rest for another 30 - 60 days. Like many of you....curiosity got the better of me ;-) Clipped the cap and poured a shot of Santiago rum (11 Years). I tentatively tested the draw and it was on the firm side. I massaged the Simones from foot to cap and tried again. Better. Not far from where I call a perfect draw. Flavours at cold were muted. There is a peaty taste to the tobacco which I suspect comes from the moist/oily wrapper leaf. Fired up the foot and the Simones comes immedialtely and surprisingly readily to flame. My initial thoughts are a Medium /full bodied cigar and a Bolivar very different to what I have had before. I am consumed and enthralled by the aroma which closely matches the flavour. The core is earth and leather....but with a sweet/floral edge. The aroma unique...cocoa/lavender. The opening third of this cigar captured my attention in a way that demanded I stop what I was doing and enjoy the experience. There is a real complexity here...a real depth of flavour. The core earth and leather are well defined but the musty cocoa /lavender lilt and waft on the palate and you find yourself trying to focus on each independently...only to fail as it morphs into another. I tried to elicit a little pepper bite but I found little. The Simones had no intention of going down that path. Into the second third now and the Simones began to quickly lose its unque sweet aroma's and flavours. The cigar became fuller and far more "Bolivaresque" in that earth and leather dominated the palate completed. It reminded me very much of a great little Bolivar Belicoso Finos ....and yet I misses the sweet cocoa/lavender nuances. One of the key qualities to the cigar is its smooth and rich nature. Towards the end of the second third it is losing a little of its composure. The last third of the Simones was a bit of a let down. Still a good to very good cigar but when you start with near puro perfection and deviation away from that path is going to be a let down. Touch of coal, charred wood, working with the leather. There is a touch of bitterness resulting from the build up of oils and I suspect moisture. I clip a little bit more away from the cap and it has improved but the burn is becoming difficut to hold and several touchups are required. I don't like to work this hard so I set it down. I would give the opening to this cigar a 94. the Second third an 89 and the last third an 86. It needs some time to work out its own insecurities. Right now it is a flawed genius...but given a little time....could be a true great.
Bartolomeo Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Bolivar Simones RE Canada TEB OCT 08 Bought a fiver to sample Brown wrapper, lots of veins, slick and well constructed, nice weight for its size Pre draw was sweet tobacco and barnyard Smoke time was 63 mins A very good cigar out of the gate, dont have to rest like some others Initial puff was salty nuts and some nugget Flavors included were Leather, woodsy after taste in 1/3, artificial sweetner which I didnt mind(think SweetnLow) and some spice....very good Cuban draw and regular burn rate Ash was White barrell, very tight This was the first Boli I really enjoyed, maybe b/c it didnt taste like the others I have sampled in the brand, definitely had a unique flavor Price is about $20/stick Sweetness settled in the 2/3, med-full strength I liked this a lot and will buy more 9.15/10 Bart
ChanceSchmerr Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Bolivar Simones RE Canada TEB OCT 08This was the first Boli I really enjoyed DITTO. I've never found a Boli I really liked until I tried a Simones late last year - it was a revelation, I've stocked up since, they are really good little smokes!
shrink Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Sampled another one about a week ago. Seems even stronger and more full-flavored than the last one I sacrificed. In time, this might be the best Bolivar in my collection, though I have some BBF's that may rival them. A potentially great cigar.

I have sampled 3-4 of these and they are coming along very nicely.
Bartolomeo Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Bought a box of these with same boxcode and had same great experience as above........man, I'm a genius Still, really the only Boli I care for Bart
TrickNick Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Bought a box of these with same boxcode and had same great experience as above........man, I'm a genius Still, really the only Boli I care for Bart The Simones was a great experience. I lucked into a few boxes of these a great price. I'm really hoping they develop well with age.
FrankBlack Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 The Simones was a great experience. I lucked into a few boxes of these a great price. I'm really hoping they develop well with age. Just got a box a few weeks ago myself...have to agree that they are a great experience as well (more complex and flavorful than the BRC, BBF, and BCE's I have)...will be buying up a few more boxes while they are available!

I must be the lone dissenter on these. I have a cab of 50 that I got when they first came out. As with any Bolivar, I knew they needed time and I have given them some. As of this writing, they are still nothing more than a cigar with more potential than 'stuff to give' right now. I do think they will be at least very good down the road, but for now--they are a real non-starter and nowhere near the smoke of a three year old BCE cabinet specimen or the magnificent Immensa.
