SmokinAl
G'day guys, I'm just about to start on veneering the Hang Ten humidor and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what they'd like to see on it? I was planning to do a simple nautical rose in the centre of a burr veneer, but if anyone has a brilliant suggestion, I'm all ears. Colt45, I'm told you're a man with keen sense of design. Want to jump in? Cheers, Al.

Colt45
» Colt45, I'm told you're a man with keen sense of design. Want to jump in? » Whomever told you that must have been drinking...... But it's funny this comes up - I don't know why, but I was just thinking about it. I like the idea of the compass rose but I was thinking that if possible, the FOH motto of friendship, laughter. loyalty, fraternity could be inscribed around the top of the lid. Maybe not overly large - perhaps something that would simply look like scroll work until you really looked at it. Regardless, you're doing a great thing, Al. BlackFriar
» This would work well. It is an actual Cubanita in action  » ya know Prez, if you just kept her outline I bet it would be pretty cool piece of woodwork. Hey Colt, any chance of quickly cutting out the background, turn the surfer and her board solid black like the cohiba head to see what it looks like? Guest Warren
A good start but it kind of looks like her left arm is grossly deformed. Although that could bring out the sympathy vote .:-D I just went back and looked at the original again and the more I look at it the more I want to help her. Colt45
» Here's a suggestion for a gem for the center. Aren't opals quite popular » in Australia? It might look quite nice and would have some local 'flavor'. There was talk of using one of Smithy's diamond earrings, but it was deemed too gaudy. Alain has decided to leave out the compass rose altogether - see the veneer thread.

SmokinAl
Hi Guys, Getting married in August. Need to have this box finished by then... Seriously, thank you all for your suggestions. I'll see what I can do about working them in. ...and so, without further ado, let me present what I actually will do on the lid of the box. Everything but the nautical rose is a photograph of the wood that’ll be used. The Rose will be made up of some nice contrasting woods of some description and I’ll inlay a gem into the centre, just to give it a bit more textural appeal. Does anyone have any objection?
