jqmunro Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 So a friend of mine wants me to obtain a box of Cohibas panetelas for him because he a had a few overseas and really enjoyed them. I tried to convince him that there are a lot of other choices that are "small format" that would be much better and a better buy. I suggested a Connie No. 3 (thanks rob) but he's stuck on the Cohibas. I thought that if I had some suggestions that maybe I could convince him that there are many other choices that would be a much better buy than the cohiba panetelas. Any favorites in the small format and thin gauge arena? Apologies if this makes little sense... I'm enjoying a bottle of the 2004 Provenance Cab. Sauv. which is not all that bad if you can get it at a reasonable price. jmun
shrink Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Your friend knows what he likes, and he likes Cohiba. So why try to talk him out of it? I think that either the Coronas Especiales or the Exquisitos would be superior, but what the hey, if he wants Panatelas, give it to heeem!
tigger Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I would get him what he wants, and if you're feeling generous, maybe buy him a few singles of some other small smokes - Partagas Shorts/Bolivar CJ/Partagas Conn 3, etc. to expose him to other options for the future.

So, bring him some cigars and smoke with him. After that, he will not only buy the panetelas, but also buy the one you treated him and start to wonder if there are anymore good stuff out there. He will ask you and try it, then buy. This is ongoing. He will try and buy and try and buy.:-D And finally, he will be reading all the post on this site. Haha
lfg2nrg Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Get him what he knows he likes. I also agree you should give him a few others to try.
VigorishSLC Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 What about the Siglo I? It's a much better value IMO and he can stay within the Cohiba line.
Colt45 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I can only concur with what's already been said. Get him the Cohibas, and if he's a good friend, throw in a few PSdC No.3s, etc. And a bottle of Provenance Cab. :-D
bikeguy1 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 » jmun I agree with the above...get him a box of what he prefers, then share some of your favs over time. So much of this hobby (like wine, whisky, food, cars, airplanes, straight razors, etc) is about individual taste, and most of us have seen our tastes evolve over time. There are cigars I enjoyed and purchased in quantity years ago that I rarely smoke now..often due to my changing taste, sometimes due to variance between vintages or a deliberate change in blending. So, rather than confuse him at this point, gently lead him into other cigars, but get him the Cohibas now..they are premium priced, but this isn't a capital purchase...if he wants to spend a few extra bucks to get the exclusive brand, let him. As I've found, you can't go wrong purchasing from the Czar (for price, quality, reliability), so even if you buy something that's not exactly to your taste, you're not paying German/Swiss/Spanish prices! Good luck...and let us know how this pans out! Bob
smk819 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I would add the Trini Reyes to the cigars suggested above. It is about my favorite small format cigar along with the Siglo I.
