jwm8592 Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Hey guys upon looking at Jay's new humidor pics (self built) and the room that he currently has, I'm wondering, do you need to rotate the your current stock within the humidor, be it boxed or loose cigars? I have a non-Aristocrat humidor that I bought on-line from Tampa Humidor, the Trivoli model. Which holds apprx. 30 boxes & 300 loose cigars (total around 1000 or so). I be happy to post pics if anyone was interested. I thought it was a pretty good buy, had some minor issues that I cleared up using some weather stripping around the door. I purchased a Cigar Oasis XL Plus humidification system that works well w/ very little maintenance. I keep my temp. around 65-66 degrees and my RH @ 63-64. It has stayed pretty consistent over the last 6 months, even though my humi has become much fuller than when I began. Currently I have room for only 1-2 more boxes in it. So basically I have maxed it out. I do notice that some of the cigars have more give then others, maybe due to being closer to the humidification device. So rotate or not?
El Presidente Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Do a check of the RH on different levels. If it is less than 1% differential on each layer I personally wouldn't bother. If more than that I would rotate. Effective fan system is essential for equal distribution of humidity.

I found this to be more of an issue (but not much) with my endtable unit than with my cabinet. I agree about the fans. With thirty boxes it should be no problem for you to rotate them if necessary. :-D
56Tweed Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 My cabinet varies top to bottom so I try and move the boxes around every 3-4 months.
broozer Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 i own the aristocrat 48 plus and it holds (according to bob's site) about 50-60 boxes and 200-300 loose cigars in the singles drawer. the difference between my lower shelf and upper shelf is very small and i have no fans in it to keep air circulating at all. i also never rotate my boxes at all. bruce
Justinwzp Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 » keep my temp. around 65-66 degrees and my RH @ 63-64. It has stayed pretty how do you keep the temp so low without a cooling unit? I'd love to see the pics if you have them handy.
n2advnture Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 » My cabinet varies top to bottom so I try and move the boxes around every » 3-4 months. Hey, mine too! ;-) I agree, calibrate a few digital hygrometers and put them throughout so you can see where your fluctuations occur. Adding fans is a must, especially when you get into taller cabinets. I also use 1 lb of the RH Beads on each shelf to help even out RH levels throughout. I hope this helps ~Mark
gyosa Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 go to the grocery store and buy a couple of Oust fan room fresheners ... battery powered. i have an aristocrat use one of these on the top shelf and never have a problem. works great.
jwm8592 Posted November 21, 2007 Author Posted November 21, 2007 Hey Justin, well first off I live in the middle of Ohio, where by tomorrow it will be between 30-40 degrees (F), I keep my house programable thermometer @ 66 degrees, my humi being an end table type is only around 3 ft. off the floor, so I'd say its a little cooler there, and I keep the blinds closed in that room. I will take some pics over the long weekend and post them when I can.

Hey Pres., I don't have a stand alone fan in the unit only the fan that is part of the Oasis XL plus unit. I did notice that the humidiy change is 63% on the bottom, 60% on the shelf above, perhaps I need to re-calibrate the meters. If the humidity is off from the bottom wouldn't the higher up (closer to the top) cigars be reading a higher humidity? Maybe a fan is needed none the less, one was suggested above, an Oust Fan??
gyosa Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 in the grocery store's (target , walmart , etc ..) air freshner aisle .... can't miss it . just don't install the liquid "perfume" capsule. they work great . they run for 5 mins every 20 mins. replaceable D-cell battery lasts 6 months , or so.... about 4 bucks. works like a champ ! , one was suggested above, an Oust Fan??
jwm8592 Posted November 22, 2007 Author Posted November 22, 2007 Gyosa, got em, thanks a bunch. Yeah, I put the fragrance bottles in the man-garage to perk up the smell out there a little bit. Thanks again for the advice.

BigSlick Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Nothing wrong with cigar box Tetris, even if you don't need to do it. :-D
nugget Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 With your singles I would put similar flavors together as they will marry in flavor over time with the heaviest aroma. Also I suggest removing the cellophane from the single that are covered. I have found they become more complex as opposed to more intense in flavor which is what most would assume. As for the boxes, I have installed 4 large fans in my cabinet and have been checking the boxers regularly and have found no need to rotate. As long as you have plenty of circulation you should be right. All the best.;-)
Kechke Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I installed two timer controlled computer muffin fans in my "Chigo" wine cooler/humidor, it is a rather tall unit, almost 6 feet and the R/H is consistantly within one point from top to bottom.

Where would one get a computer muffin fan, not sure what that is. Is it exactly a fan in a computer? I really think my issue is that I have boxes stacked one on top of the other and there isn't any room for the air to circulate. Either another unit is in order or need to smoke more, quicker.

I also like to open boxes once a year or two and rotate the cigars within the box (move top layer to bottom, left to right, and vice versa.) If you are aging cigars, it helps to age consistently.
