The answer will depend on how big the cellar is & what the outside ambient conditions are.

unfortunately it's above ground and I've never had an above ground cellar.. it's a true test of my patience.

Mines are broken. But since I use humidity beads to keep humidity, I have no problem.

I am also having big problems raising humidity in my new wine cooler cabinet. I have two different hygro/thermometers both showing around only 40RH.

I have only just received my beads which are now hanging in my cabinet, hopefully that will soon help stabilise humidity. The thing I don't understand is that the back panel of the cooler is gathering a lot of condensation, which drips down into the channel made for this.

Temperature hovers around 65' and only goes up to the limit of 18'C or 66F. The back panel gets very cold, so much so that I had pushed a box too far back and it actually froze to the panel with a lump of ice.

Perhaps circulation is a problem. I am now putting a small battery operated fan inside and will see how it goes when I get home this evening.

Err... you do realise that for there to be ice in your cabinet, the temperature in that area is necessarily below 0° C. That sounds a little cold for cigar storage tbh.

I put mine on a timer, not a digital one but mechanical, looks like similar thing to what you see on some water heaters, 15min segments that you push in to turn on. I have mine in my bedroom, ac runs all night but off during the day. RH does drop dramatically whenth compressor kicks in. I have a 8oz sock of beads on every shelf (8 in total, its large the size of a fridge) RH drops to around 40% but the beads bring it back quickly. I only need to run it a few times through the day to bring the temp down. All my boxes and cabs are closedand I have not seen any ill effects> Not the ideal situation but a drop in Rh for 15mins every few hours doesnt seem to have a bad effect. I wouldnt run it for say an hour, 15mins with the boxes sealed is fine.

Above ground walk-ins can be problematic during the winter months. Does your cellar haveit's own independent cooling/heating or is it tied into the central HVAC?

If you've turned the heat on, as you know it wreaks havoc on RH. My recommendation, change the batteries or get a new hygrometer. Then add a portable humidifier in there to boost RH, if you don't already have one, should the problem persist.

Yes, Cam - you did not mention the specifics of your set up. But the simplest suggestion I might

make (and for Mel as well), would be to add a small bowl of distilled water. Not the most elegant

solution, but it will help. In Mel's case, at 40%, you'd basically have to saturate your beads, and at

that point, they would simply be releasing moisture. I would try leaving the beads dampened as

normal, and add supplemental moisture.

Thanks Claudi and Colt.

Claudius t is strange the ice forming and it was only where the box touched the back. Agree the back must've been freezing or below but the meters in the front still registered 60' F ??? as they do most of the time. I can only think that the cooler is packed too tight. Oh no! Not another even larger cabinetimage260.gif

Will try as you say Colt. Have been spraying the bag with distilled water but guess I really must give them a real soaking till the beads are all translucent. I'll let you know.
