Colt45 Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 On more than one occasion, our humble host - and other members as well - have mentioned that a loose draw can rob a cigar of flavor. I believe it, and have had my share of mediocre cigars with loose draws. But I've never had a direct comparison until today, when I had my first "bad" Bolivar Corona Gigantes - bad being a relative term. I have been smoking BCGs from an '03 box, and until today, all have been very, very good. This cigar, though it seemed to be well constructed, had quite the loose draw. While the base flavor of supple leather was discernible, it was subdued, and the cigar showed little depth or dimension. The finish was very arid and rather dirty. I hope this is an aberration. Even so, it was not an absolutely terrible cigar, but compared to others from the same box, it was but a shadow. If pushed, I suppose I'd rather a draw on the loose side versus one that was tight, but in the end, I personally find neither very appealing.

True, a loose draw results in a cigar that burns hot, and this often ruins the flavor. But given a choice, I'd rather have a 'tight' (not plugged) cigar. At least time heals this problem. There's nothing that will fix a loosely rolled vitola.
Guest Warren Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 For some reason I've always been a huge fan of loose draws , gets my mind a wanderin. I really shouldn't let my mind wander , it's too small to be let out on it's own.:-D

A tight draw causes me aggrivation and I smoke for relaxation and peasure not stress and irritation. Sorry shrink but I'm with the guys that like it loose. Hey Colt don't suck so hard and just kiss at the thing.;-)
Colt45 Posted September 24, 2007 Author Posted September 24, 2007 » Hey Colt don't suck so hard and just kiss at the thing.;-) Mel, I'm a bit confused - here is some advice you gave me in another thread: » Cut a bigun, stick it n your mouth and suck it good. Which is it? Anyway, back to the topic at hand. As a point of reference, last week I smoked another RA Estupendos. It had a draw that while not plugged, was very tight and barely smokeable, with not a lot of smoke volume. Too much work, muted flavor, etc, etc. A real waste of time and tobacco. In this instance, if I had to choose between the RAE or BCG, I'd have to go with the loose BCG - but I did not really enjoy either.

Mel Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 For once I was actually talking a bout cigars but your gutter mind is what it is. I have had SEVERAL overly tight RA Estupendos and the poor burn rate does not release the flavors properly. If the cigar is on the loose side I can always light -short draw to slow it down but if the cigar is tight I can not suck it harder. Dear CIGARHead I've seen you suck a bigun and you did a fine job.;-)

smokum Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 Somehow I knew this would wind up in the bath house !!! To me ,,nothing worse than a tight cigar...I throw them out post haste. Looser draw I can deal with.
Colt45 Posted September 25, 2007 Author Posted September 25, 2007 » Somehow I knew this would wind up in the bath house !!! » While what's left of my mind may indeed reside in the gutter, in this case I assure one and all that it's all about the cigars.....

Oh yeh damn right it's all about the cigars mates, hate tight. If we go to the bathhouse I'll not complain about tight. One of the reasons I do buy some custom cigars is they are spot on for the draw.
