El Presidente Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I am away fishing next week (brothers, son , daughter on 1900 hectare dam with wild river feeds). Beautiful country full of structure and weed beds. I wand to pick up Friday a new Fly Rod which will meet the needs of Bass and Trout ( for our Chilean fishing expedition late February). Looking at a G loomis StreamDance Metolius - High Line Speed: (8'6" #5 - 4pc). I am an above average Fly caster who after 5 years of exclusive salt water fly fishing (with predominant 10-20 knot winds) have developed a fast agressive action although I enjoy the slower load ups of Sage. I own about 8 fly rods all essentially Loomis and Sage along with a 7 weight Loop. All my rods are 7-10 weights bar a cheeky little 3 weight that I use for river gar. Any recommendations gentlemen?

Rob, I also have an aggresive arm when casting which is why I like the Loomis, I have been very happy with my old IM6 2 piece, which works well into the wind and has lots of feel with Rainbow trout 5 -12lb. Tight lines and have a great time.
jdbrown Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Rob , I recently went with a 6 weight Cabelas outfit for bass and trout for the purpose of teaching my kids. Sage and Loomis are in my opinion not a good fit with children unless you want to buy another one in a week! If you are in need of spinning or bait casting rods for your kids I highly recommend fig rig rods. I have totally switched from G-Loomis and St Croix to this brand. They are handmade in Grand Rapids MN and are very reasonably priced. I have a friend on their Pro Staff and after he introduced me to them a few years back and I was sold! They do sell Fly Rods for Muskie and Pike but I have not tried these. WWW.FIGRIGRODS.COM
El Presidente Posted September 20, 2007 Author Posted September 20, 2007 Thanks gentlemen. I have 3-4 training fly rods which my kids use. Nice slow actions so they can feel the rod load easily. It is amazing how quickly they can nail a serviceable casting action. Their rod awareness however is abysmal. They will bang them, step on them, get them caught in low hanging scrub.....gives me the Heeby geebies.
jdbrown Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Rob, almost laughed up a lung! ( rod awareness is abysmal) It can certainly be a three ring circus!!! Mine are same age and this is how I feel when I take them out for a day :-) ;-) :-( :crying:
Well Armed Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Rob I have a Loomis Metolius streamdance (by the way Metolius is a river - I have fished it many many times, you should too someday) 5 weight. I do not have the high line speed version but if I could trade it in for one I would. It is a great all around fly rod. Loomis and Sage are at the top of their game. A lesser-known bu equally awesome soft-yet-holy-****-powerful rod is the Winston BIIx. Check them out. My favorite trout rod of all time was the Powell TiBoron - which they ruined and turned into the **** Tiboron II. Ruined. But, the Winston BIIx seems to be the closest to the original Tibby.
PartagasIV Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 As a devotee of Orvis rods, I have to put in my 2 cents...many fishermen seem to hate on them, but I cannot fault the quality and construction of their rods, all across the range. R&D is superb on the high end, and if you EVER break a rod for ANY reason (car door, hungry dog..) they'll replace it for free.
Mel Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Dear Wellarmed I have a Winston BIIx somethingorother and it is a NOODLE. Way to to soft to handle the wind or large flies. I bought one for a trip to the Bahamas and fished a Sage TCR(TRC) 9.5 ft 7wgt overlined with a 8wgt WF line and it is a rocket. On the light side for large bass hair bugs but does great with my smaller Dhalberg Divers that I tie and throw for the Smallmouth in our rivers. It was heads above the Winston 8wgt in the salt for the bones. Very high dollar rod but you can afford it Mr. Prez after all the money you take off us dills.
Moglman Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Many great rods but while I own about 12 rods between a 2 wt and an 11 wt, they are all models 6 to 10 years old. I prefer fast action in most situations over the slow to moderate action rods. I know there are exceptions to all opinions below within brands. All I can say specifically is I believe Sage is the best for smooth fast action rods. The Z-axis and TCR would both meet the needs I like Winston and Scott but their action may not be appropriate for a broad range fly rod. Loomis, Orvis and Powell all make beautiful fly rods with models to suit your needs. Finally, if you haven't looked at Thomas & Thomas, DO! Other than Sage, these are my absolute favorite rod out there. The Horizon II is reported as spectacular, better than the Horizon, of which I own several. http://www.thomasandthomas.com/p.horizon/hz.html
chef2275 Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 i have to say that the G's and the Sage's are really well crafted and nice but for some reason i love my ST. Croix's, i have no idea why but i love them. For some reason i end up catching more fish with the two Croix's that i have. If you ever need to look at US prices and all take a look at Cabelas.com. Even their stores are amazing to go into. chef
