According to the wild life atlas of rare sea creatures of the south Pacific I believe we are looking at a poor example of the lesser known Big nosed chocolate starfish. This one doesn't look at all well and may have washed up because of attack from a larger specimen. Usually they look quite different when angry and ready for battle.

That photo is currently being used on all Cigar Boxes in Australia as part of the Anti Smoking Campaign. It is reputedly far more effective than the cancer pictures in detering youngsters from taking up cigars ;-)
