sptcigars Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 hi everyone. im new to the site and new to cigars in general. been smoking for 8 to 10 months. made my introduction over at newbie intro and was ask by presidente to post my review of my weekend smokes. well, here go's. friday was excellent! after work me and a coworker/ buddy of mine went for an after work drink and a cigar. i had just bought about 10 padron 2000's. i know its not habanos but this cigar was excellent. i love padrons. i had the chance to taste a 64 anni, and it was very good. so i had the padron and some jameson on the rocks. i love jameson. especially cold. on the rocks it perfect for a hot day after work. the padron was perfect as well. perfect burn, nice aroma of heavy coffee and spice. the taste was outstanding. creamy coffee with a little spice/pepper. the balance was right on. not one ounce of bitter in this smoke and the sweetness of the jameson just made the heavy creaminess of the padron stand out. that was a perfect end to my day. saturday- saturday wasnt so good. i went to the liquer store and bought some french merlot, some cab from chile and the best scotch ive had so far, the belvenie doublewood. i didnt try the belvenie on sat. i decided to make it a sunday evening event. (something about a sunday evening for taste testing good scotch and have a good smoke.) saturday turned out bad due to a recent purchase i've made. i bought a box of arturo fuente sun grown belicosos and they just arent burning right. the draw is hard and it just became a battle. i fought the good fight trying to get that cigar to burn and avoid the bitter, tannic awefulness but just couldnt win. i gave up. saturday was a bust for the AF sungrown. they'll stay in the humi for a while. however the night wasnt a total loss. the bordeaux merlot was quite good. sweet, light with just touch of dry finish. sunday- the day i was waiting for. i had a buddy come over to help share in my delight. i broke open the belvenie, hoping it was as good as i wanted it to be. for 44$ a bottle, it better be. thats the most i have ever spent on a spirit. of course the lagavulin was tempting but at 74$ i wasnt touching it. so i cracked the seal, got two sniffer glasses and it was to the porch. i swirled, i sniffed. a warm bouquet of fruity sweet, a little sting of the spice. i took a drink. ahh, all that i hoped for. sweet, oaky, warm. i lit my upmmann connoisseur 1. it was light, musky, smoky tobacco. in all my joy, for me, the upmann didnt match the strength of the belvenie. no complaints here though. sunday evening ending my weekend perfectly. so who else has a good weekend story. Or perhaps a comment on mine?
CelticBasque Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Welcome Aboard! FYI - Those Fuente Cuban Belicosos become AMAZING cigars if you can let them rest for a few months at a slightly lower (than 70%) RH. They'll amaze you after a short rest at around 65% percent... ;-) I had a splendid Friday afternoon as I was FINALLY able to sitdown at the B&M I frequent in Tucson, AZ. I've been shopping there for years but never had the (wife-free) opportunity to really soak-in the place. Started-off with a Davidoff Grand Cru #1 whilst chatting with some of my fellow patrons and ended my time there with a Dunhill Signed Range Corona. Both were a bit moist as they'd just come out of the walk-in but, since this stop wasn't originally planned, I didn't have any of my own cigars to smoke there. Brought home an OpusX "A" and a Dunhill SR Churchill that I'll rest for awhile.

brian1 Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Welcome aboard. The Padron Anniversary 1964 Exclusivo is one of the few domestics I always have a supply of. Superb cigars.
Mel Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 I also smoke a Padron or Fuente every month or so and they are alright for what they are. I smoke an 03 Sig III yesterday and it was perfect in all areas of review with an effortless draw of good smoke volumes and flavor. I actually had a nice Punch Churchill on Sat. night, go figure as some of you all know what a fan of that cigar I am, NOT!;-)
Claudius Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 I havent had Balvenie Doublewood in 2 or 3 years, but I have a good memory of it. The price you quote seems a little steep, but then again, they have to ship it over to you guys (I'm from Europe). The Lagavullin at 74 USD is horribly expensive, though. Is that the regular 16 yo one? That's like 55 here... Anyway, those Padron 64s sound like I should try them. Any good website to get them from at a decent price?
El Presidente Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Nice weekend review SPT The Czar House Alarms went off on Sunday while I was coaching at the rugby. It was a power failure so I wasn't overly concerned when I got the phone call. After a great 29/5 win by the boys I popped home to Rancho Relaxo picked up the keys and a Siglo 1 for the 25 minute Sunday drive to the office. Took the roof off the Jeep JK and pumped up the stereo listening to a mix of Zappa and Elvis Costello. What a great 30 minutes :-)
