Great Review Rob, I simply love the flavour profile you described at the start of this smoke...

However its been months since my last Boli RC, mainly because of the bitterness/tannic path you described this example heading down. I had two in a row and decided to let them be for awhile...

Also experienced this during the back end of an Immensas last week.

In saying that I will have to revisit the RC and see if it can live up to my Boli CJ's or CE's, they have been outstanding...

I do. But from what I have read the earlier 06 box you can get the better. My first was from POS MAR06 and have been fantastic! Have not smoked one in a while though.

The CA rating of number one cigar in 2006 stumped me. I had a particular box of 06's BRC which I would put at No1 or damn close. Yet, I have had plenty of 06 examples which were underwhelming.

How do you choose a No 1 cigar for a year on a single tasting? I would have assumed you would need to taste various examples throught a year (differing codes) and average out the scores/experiences.

That way you would get a fair assessment of the No 1 cigar for a particular year.

Could be a worthwhile thread ;-)

And to really do it right, I think trying the same cigars after arrival, and then at 1, 3, 5, and 8 or 10-year intervals would paint the truest picture.

Thanks for the review! I am almost out and may consider some of these in the next order. We'll see how the next sampling goes. I only have two left and I have enjoyed these immensely.

Bolivar Royal Corona POS ABR 07

You have to love a cigar which gives you a woody just by looking at it :cool: Gorgeous dark chocolate colour with a wrapper swimming in oils.

However, I have been burn't before by good looking dusky maidens who promise the world and deliver a hollow souless performance (......still talking cigars folks). You know the type, call out to you...beckon you to approach and choose them instead of the myriad of other options. Sure...it all starts well, firm to the touch, sweet aroma at cold, perfect build as if designed by God himself. Yet, away from the initial visual intoxication it is all a case of smoke and mirrors...yet again you have been duped out of your hard earned by a tramp in a $200 dress and nickle heart.

And so I approached this Bolivar Royal Corona...with an equal mix of lust and caution.

Aesthetically the specimen is a delight. Well filled in all the right places, perfect curves which upon touch bounce back firm and yet soft. Removed the cap and brought it gently to the lips. Sweet cocoa delight wrapped in a perfect draw, not overly easy...almost slightly breathless.

Foreplay completed..... I applied a little heat. Royal was quick to respond with billowing white plumes of soft sensual clouds and a taste of stewed fuits, cocoa and coffee. Medium intensity but there was little doubt that their was something fuller and building beneath.

I may have pushed too hard at this stage as I wanted to wrap myself in the sensory pleasures and she briefly turned bitter and distant. I slowed down, re-touched the foot and she regained a rhythm of flawless cool sweet spice delivery.

Well into proceedings it has been a pleasure exploring the many different layers. There is a backbone of steel to her, she is full and slightly wild but at the same time soft. The cascading elements of cocoa, fruits, coffee and toast have me mesmerised but as soon as I invite the tought of utopia....our world collapses as distinct as a knock on the door. My nemesis Tannin and bitterness have arrived.

Royal Corona lost all composure. The gentle delivery of sweet spices ended abruptly to be replaced by an acrid bitterness which led to confusion and disillusionment. Try as I might I couldn't turn her around as she bolted for the door and I checked my wallet (not sure where that came from).

Wanting to remember the great part of the experiece I let the moment die. I have Royals number (box code) and am in no doubt I will call again.... sooner rather than later.
