This was really nice looking cigar. Tan, smooth wrapper with a good feel throughout the cigar. I also really love the Campanas shape. Admittedly, this is my first Juan Lopez so I have nothing to compare this regional blend to as far as regular production JL. So far, the regional edicions have been good for the most part, but young. The Obus is no exception.

Initial light and burn are fantastic and the smoke is plentiful. A perfect draw to the cigar. First impressions are of a sweet, mellow smoke. Not overly mild, on the lighter side of medium bodied. Flavors start off with light coffee bean notes and also a sweet spice. The youth of the cigar is also present as there is a constant "greenness" to it that underlies every puff. This does not abate throughout, but it also does not get any stronger. There is no bitterness to it at all. The cigar has a ridiculously long finish which makes up for what it lacks in power.

The ash is strong and firm and I never worry about it falling off on me. About half-way through the cigar, the coffee notes dissipate and charred wood and light cedar come into play. Draw and burn are still great. The smoke has a chewiness to it that I enjoy greatly. The long finish is still present thankfully, but it is starting to bore me a little bit at this point.

smoke it down to the last inch before putting it out. There is a slight change over to an earthy and vegetal profile in the last third of the cigar which perplexes me a little bit. It is not strong enough for me to get a good grip on the flavor, nor does it last very long.

Overall: I would rate the Obus 89-90 right now with good prospects for it's future. It is mild obviously, but there is enough complexity to give me a good feeling for better development down the road. Also, when the youth of the cigar disappears, the flavors will become more prevalent. The Obus had one of the longest finishes I can remember in any cigar. It literally stayed with more for hours after I put it down and felt like I had just taken a fresh puff. This will be a very good cigar in several years.

Great Review!

I believe in the potential of these cigars so much that I have 2 cabs set away ;-)

Totally agree about the light earth / vegetal / grassy side and the cedar; the Obus I smoked also tasted like honey and almond (after roughly half the cigar).

I agree with Mike33's review, very young but tons of complexity just waiting to burst out with some time.

The one that I was generously gifted showed the same characteristics as some aged La Flor de Canos caronas which Claudius noted.

Wish I had access to a cab to enjoy their progress!

» Nice review Mike. :ok: I'm really liking the Obus.

» Do you know the box number?

Sorry I don't. I just had this lone single :-(
