mbrody Posted October 15, 2008 Share Posted October 15, 2008 Great information gentlemen! I fear that I have mistakenly been keeping my cigars in boxes that are open in my humidor (or in trays). They are exposed to the air in the humidor as opposed to being in a closed environment in their original box/cabinet. Tampa mentions that this will affect the bouquet, which in turn will affect the flavor and aroma. Also, is it safe to assume that aging singles in a tray will result in a cigar that has less flavor (loses bouquet), but may age faster? I can test this by removing a cigar from a closed box and place it in an exposed tray. Then I will wait one year to compare the closed box smoke vs. the same single left in an exposed tray. It's not far from the truth that "if it's in the air, it ain't in the cigars." Some aromatic compounds are volatile meaning they readily dissipate into the air. Theoretically speaking, the more a box is opened, the more air exchange that occurs, the less flavor remains in the cigars. Practically speaking, though, I doubt if anyone has done such a controlled experiment to gauge the effect. You just might be the first. I'll remove 2 sticks per box for storage in a tray (in the event that one smoke turns out to be a bum!). I will use a year time. I look forward to hearing all about how this turns out. Don't forget to match the things that are not of interest. So for example, feel free to open the humidor containing the trayed cigars as much as you like but keep the average temperature and humidity the same in both the box and tray conditions. Fantastic information, I'm not as 'Seasoned' in smoking cigars like most on this forum, I been smoking Cubans for around 10 years only, but the information provided has blown my mind and made me think about alot of factors in regards to storage and in general, our own senses and how they work 'In a nut shell'. dicko Posted August 6, 2009 Share Posted August 6, 2009 "no wine or sauv blanc? no wine every day." haha this is great!! im putting myself through uni working at a bottle shop and no joke in the 2 years i have been there we've gone from 1& 1/2 bay of shelves of sauv blanc/ssb/sbs to 4!! there are some nasty 'fruity sweet' numbers out there for sure but some ssb blends (esp. margie river) go alright! as far as the cigar posts... as a newbie, 80% of that flew over my head but excellent, ripper information!! thanks Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
