Guest cohiba Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 My post about H Upmann #2 brought other things to mind. Ive heard various people comment about good sticks tasting bad now and getting worse, will they turn around? Im speaking about HDM Pyramids El's , Epicure especials El, and others as well. Prez has said a few times they are bad right no and seems to be getting worse. No one has given up there thoughts on them coming bad in to their glory. What do you think? I can understand for example Sublimes.....a big smoke, going into a long sick period, but they should all turn around with time. Learning alot about aging and sick periods, would love your thoughts. Cohiba

I have not aged any of the HdM ELs, so I don't know if they will turn around or not. I do know that cigars like the HU No. 2 and the Partagas Series D No. 4 do go into "sick" periods, but turn around very nicely. Others do as well, but these are good examples.
Colt45 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 The only cigar you mentioned that I've tried has been the HdM Epicure Especial. I was not overly impressed, but that's subjective, and probably not really in line with what you're asking. To borrow a wine analogy, a wine (or cigar in this case), that's truly flawed from the beginning, can never really be expected to come around. Whether or not that's the case with the cigars you mention, I can't say, and probably only time will tell. Howerver, I would expect your Upmann #2s to come around nicely. As an example, a year or so ago, I tried my first PSD4 - airy and bland. The next try, same thing. About a month ago, I decided to give another a go, and finally, I'm seeing some progress, though there's still a way to go.
El Presidente Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 You have mentioned two cigars that have no history to judge them by. However, I have had excellent examples of both in their youth. True, the ones I have tried over the past 12 months have gone to seed however I suspect they will turn around into very good cigars....if not greats. They were absolute crackers when fresh. Just give them time to evolve. I still think the HDM Pirimide will turn into a fuller bodied version of the Padron Anniversario :-)

Here's a quote from my May 05 review of the PAM: "When the PAM reached its culmination, I savored a wine-like sweetness, which reminded me of a Hoyo Pyramid EL. I had never considered the similarity before."

Tampa1257 Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 OK, then we can say that the cigars might be in an extended "dumb" period? I say that because they should be out of the youthful (ammonia) "sick" period by now.

El Presidente Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Shrink....Ken accusing anyone else of plagarism is indeed the pot calling the kettle black. I swear as a wine writer he only has 24 articles which he rehashes for different publications here in OZ. .....If pushed I will post some of his dribble.....
