FPdoc Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 To start, hello. This is my first post. I’ve been trolling this board for several months now and have learned a great deal from you guys, thanks. I’ve been smoking for 14 years but because of money and geography have largely stuck to Hondurans. I’ve smoked a few habanos but, never consistently enough to develop any particular favorites. R&J cedros and HDM epicures left good memories. My wife and I recently found out we will be having or first child later this summer, and needless to say we are thrilled. This, along with my first real job, has afforded me a golden chance to spend a couple of hundred bucks on a box or two of Cubans and basically get away without catching a tremendous amount of ****. Why not pass out great cigars and have a few left over for the cooler, eh? My questions are this: 1.) Which brands might be good without any real aging? a. I usually smoke toros or double coronas 2.) How much should I try to get away with at once? a. Not to put you on the spot, but a lot of you guys have to have some experience with marriage/cigar balances. Sorry for the long post. This is such a refreshing board. Thanks in advance….Brian
CigarZen Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Welcome and congrats on the new addition to your family. Enjoy him/her! Oh . . . and sleep now 'cause that could be at premium in a few short months. LOL! Others may have a different view, but I think Hoyos are ready to smoke sooner than other brands and are a good introduction to Havanas, albeit on the milder side. You might try Epi 1s or 2s. I think BBFs are very good too, and are a step up the power meter. They show a good dose of earth and at times a fruit-like sweetness. You might also consider a Punch churchill. They are not tannic when young. I really like the Punch DC but are at their best with age, imo. OK guys, what do ya say?
alexgtp Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Where do I begin. I am partial to H. Upmann. Particularly the Mag 46 reasinable price and I have not met one person who has not liked them. Cant go wrong with Cohiba Robustos. I could go on but you get the picture. It all depends on your tastes.
jay8354 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Hello Brian, Let me start off by saying Welcome to FOH. As you would have know by now, we are a fun loving bunch here. Also, Congratulations to your new arrival. Now to your question: Let me state that with my own experience, that this is a golden opportunity that you cannot miss. Of course, IMO, dependant on budget that you can afford, try to maximise your purchases (really important here, if you get this wrong, you will be in trouble no matter what). I would have to say at least 2, one for giving away and one to yourself. I have learned that once your wife finds out that you buy cigars, buying them is more a cat and mouse game. So make use of any plausible explanations to get them while you can. My preference is more towards DC, so I would recommend the following: RAG Partagas Lusi SLR DC HDM DC Punch DC The ones that will be good with minimal or no age, IMO, would be either the HDM DC or the Punch DC. My advise is to contact Lisa and get her opinion on what is good for both DC and Toro. You cannot go wrong with Lisa.
FPdoc Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 You guys rock... I know what you mean about the cat and mouse game....I won't be able to hide this like a small order from JR's in the credit card bill. Screw it. I have had a Punch Churchill and enjoyed it. How would the Partagas SP2's be?

Welcome to FOH As I am a self described Partagás *****, I believe that the Partagás Serie P No. 2 would be a very wise choice, and I would also consider the Corona Gordas because you like toros. May I say that I would highly recommend the following: Bolivar Coronas Extra H Upmann Mag 46 Hoyo Epicure No. 1 Partagás Serie D No. 4 Partagás Serie P No. 2 Gives you a wide range of flavors and at a moderate price.

They need some serious age to show their best. FPdoc: If you're only getting one box, go for either the Mag 46 or the Partagas P2. Both are medium bodied, flavorful, awesome smokes.
J-ROD Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Welcome and congrats:waving: Listen well as these guys will not steer you wrong:ok:
The Privateer Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Welcome! Some great suggestions here....I would second the Hoyo DC for a great young performer. Most Bolivars taste good fresh too, and many of my friends have also been smoking young Edmundos and enjoying them.
vlime77 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Welcome and congrats, I'm new to this forum myself and already I found the members to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I quite favour the HDM double co for minimal aging but personally the partagas lusi holds top spot for me. Thomas
First Lady Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Hi Brain To start welcome to the fourm :-D Glad to see you to see you have taken the plunge and posted your first post. If I can help you with choosing cigars for the head wetting(this means celebrating the birth - not sure if you use this term over there) just let me know, that's what I am here for TFL
genevapics Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Congrats FPdoc on the new addition. You picked a great place for advice. I recently purchased a box of Montecristo #5. Now, these are a smaller size than you like, but I must say these are very nice smokes right off the truck. Nice rich chocolate taste that goes on and on. A good 30 minute smoke. Some others that I would suggest would be the following: Montecristo #2: these are great cigars. I am not sure how they are young, but still a wonderful cigar. Bolivar Royal Coronas: I believe Lisa is running a special on these right now... and they have 5 years of age on them! These, while a bit pricey, should absolutely be ready to smoke right away! Those are my thoughts. As always, it's all about what you prefer. Best of luck on your decision and again, congrats on the new addition!
Taino Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Welcome Doc! In 2004-2005 Partagas, Diplomaticos, Juan Lopez, JL Piedra, Cohiba, Trinidad and HUpmann (of what I've tried and remember) are smoking very well fresh.
Tampa1257 Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Brian aka FPDOC, It has come to our attention that you have violated one of the cardinal rules here on FOH, which I quote: "If you have been ejected from another board, e-mail me for a consideration of probation. Don't hold your breath.". I have checked with the management and no such notice has been made, nor have you attempted to our knowledge to make any amends toward previous Cigar Boards that you have been a member of and have recently been Banned from. You are hereby banished from FOH. Should you feel like you would like to appeal this decision, then contact El Prez upon his return from Cuba via email and explain in detail your actions on CulbStogie and CigarSnobs and why your membership here at FOH should be considered. Tampa
genevapics Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Damn Tampa. You are effing GOOD! You must have sources throughout the galaxy... far... far... away! WOW I am impressed. Fortunately for me, I can't be kicked off of any other forums, because I don't belong to any other forums! By the way, how does it feel to be the EXECUTIONER?
Ginseng Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 » Fortunately for me, Ican't be kicked off of any other forums, » because I don't belong to any other forums! Now there's a dedicated man. :-D BTW, Geneva, looks like we never got our promised 50F day here in Delly, eh? Oh well. Wilkey
