korryp Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 » I have heard so much about this drink does anyone know how to make them ? What you'll need: 2½ oz. light rum 1 lime 1 tbsp. simple syrup mint leaves (8 or so sprigs worth) ice club soda tall glass spoon, or some other utensil that can be used to mash the mint leaves 1. Make simple syrup: Heat equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan until just before boiling and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved. Make up a big batch – say a cup of sugar and a cup of water – than toss it in the fridge … it’ll easily keep for a couple of weeks, during which time you’ll be able to whip up mojitos at a moment’s notice, to the delight of your very fortunate friends. 2. Place the mint leaves and 1 tbsp. of the simple syrup (cooled) in the glass, then squish it all around with a spoon (or whatever appropriate utensil you can find) for 20-30 seconds, until you can smell that good minty smell. 3. Cut the lime in half. Squeeze the juice out from both halves into the glass, then drop one half into the glass. 4. Pour in the rum and stir. 5. Add plenty of ice, then top off the mixture with club soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy!
patrick Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 I would add a little bitters and you are good to go!
Taino Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 I like mine without sugar and lots of mint... I'm sweet enough, don't need more of that;-) :-D
alexgtp Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 My personal fave recipe. take i lime and cut it in to 8 part (you can use 4-8 pieces). Place them into the cup . Using a stick I mash up the limes until no more juice can be extracted from them than add ice over the limes. 2 shots of Ypicoa Rum or HC7 is available :-D 1 shot of sugar cane syrup (or you can dissolve your own sugar in to water) Splash of soda water I than add this to a tumbler and shake it so it mixes well. I than pour this into the glass and top it off with some mint leaves. Voila..
genevapics Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 » HC7!! What is HC7? SOrry for my ignorance!
alexgtp Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 » » HC7!! » » What is HC7? SOrry for my ignorance! Havana Club 7 Rum = Cuban Rum. Decent rum but their are better rums out there.. Being in the US I am not lucky enough to purchase this product
n2advnture Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 The recipe is quite easy (as shown above) but I suggest sprinkling some raw sugar on the mint before mashing, the grit helps extract more of the oils out of the mint. One of my fav drinks! BTW Alex, if I catch you wasting HC7 in a mojito, you will be severely punished! :-D ~Mark

Ginseng Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 What a fabulous thread. I was introduced to mojitos in of all places, Seattle, Washington. There was this great little Cuban restaurant in the city and they made these. Dang, this is one tasty drink on a hot sweaty day. Since my return, I've never been able to get it right though. Now I know enough to give it another try. Wilkey

But has been readily accepted around the world. My favorite recipe for it was from CASA FUENTE in Las Vegas because they topped it off with a TOBACCO INFUSED Gran MArnier.;-) Basic generic recipe: 1 lime cut into small pieces.. add them to a cup.. and crush them till no more juice comes out. add ice to cup. in a shaker mix the following. 2 ounces of YPICOA rum 2 ounces of cachaca (distilled liquor product of sugar cane) 2 teaspoons of sugar (dissolve it ) Shake it up and pour on to ICE with limes.. :-D

Cartierusm Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 My first Mojito was horrible. I was at a steak house and couldn't decide what to have so I called my cousin to see if there was anything I should try and he suggested a Mojito. So I ordered one and it was horrible. So I called my cousin back and he said well did you stir it, I said no, big difference. I had no idea that you needed to stir it and get the sugar dissolved. Anyway every year my GF friend has a mojito party.
