Weekend Poll Comp: Your go-to cigar-drink pairing...

This weekend's poll is all about the drink pairing/s you love with cigars in general or specific match-ups.

I've found my top 3 go with anything - water, iced tea, and rum punch will either be neutral or help enhance/ bring out more of the subtle flavors. 

My whisk(e)y selection will typically be with certain sticks. Irish, Highland, and Speyside can go with most, but  bourbon with Upmann, Diplo, and Partagas, and Monte. Rye with Boli and Monte.

ETA - forgot Four Roses and Punch! Sooo fruity

For the most part - Scotch is the GOTO. Preference for Irish, Speyside, Highlands

During the warmer months - after a BBQ. Irish mule.

On colder days - the occasional green tea.

Simple, I drink sparkling water with a cigar. Hardly ever anything else. I can definitely appreciate how a bourbon or a rum, or sometimes even a stout, can enhance and accompany a cigar very effectively, but I don’t usually want that. The aroma and taste of a cigar is what I want, purely, if I’m taking the time to burn one. The bubbles in sparkling water seem to do something to the palate, further bringing those flavors of the leaf to life. A cigar and bourbon combine to make new flavors, as a cello and piano can combine in a Beethoven cello sonata, but of course the sound of each instrument can be savored on their own. That’s how I approach a cigar, almost every time, savoring the magic that starts with the soil and is expressed through the blending of the leaves. Also, I just happen to be a sparkling water addict. In my kegerator, I constantly keep one keg of the stuff on tap.

Carbonated beverages and smoke feels weird to me, makes me feel like I have pop rocks in my mouth.

Diplomatico Rum for me is so easy to pair with Cuban Cigars. The right body, a gentle sweetness and viscosity which doesn't linger on the palate for too long. Any decent Cab Sav or Shiraz. Anything Hoyo scotch and soda.

I always start with black coffee then go with sparkling water and sometimes I'll add one/two Negronis. Unless it's a champagne kind of day, then it would be champagne only 🍾

I mostly drink a black coffee with a cigar. Invariably, if it's alcohol it will be champagne, an Old-Fashioned cocktail (made with either bourbon or rye) or sometimes cognac. But mostly it's straight coffee.

I'll be the outlier & frequently opt for an American lager such as Coors Banquet or Lone Star Beer. The taste is basic & clean and doesn't overly influence the flavor nuances of the cigar. 

I will say that other beverage accompaniments that I enjoy with Havanas include English Breakfast Tea, Dr. Pepper soda, rum on the rocks, and the timeless Old Fashioned.

The "pairing" depends more on the time of day than anything else for me. I drink black coffee in the morning. During the day I'm drinking diet pop or water or gatorade. After dinner, water or black tea. I choose the cigars based on when I'm smoking them, and what I'll be drinking at that time. Diet cola is one drink that I haven't found a good cigar match for yet. Fresca on the other hand is a really good match for a lot of cigars.

I have 2 main stays that work with any cigar. Either a club soda if I want something more refreshing/ a palate cleanser. The second is some sort of coffee, ideally a latte but a nice iced coffee on a hot day works great. 

If I want an alcoholic drink its hard to beat a nice Mojito but I rarely pair alcohol and cigars.

Sparkling water, champagne if I have the time as the effervescence helps keep my palate fresh. Otherwise, coffee and dark beers are in the regular rotation with the occasional cognac/cocktail late night combo.

Black coffee, espresso, San Pellegrino are my usuals. Depending on the cigar also often pair with Port, scotch, rum and dark beers.

However, if it’s something else, always orange juice. Ever since the testing Rob et all did on the various liquids to consume while smoking a cigar and one of the top selections being  OJ, I’ve always chosen it.

Drink List A = Cigar is in the spotlight.
- Coffee with or without cream.
- Lightly sweetened iced tea. 
- Cream soda
- plain tap water. 
- Guinness, but for fuller smokes only

Drink List B = I just want to cut loose
- whatever the hell I want 
- a sherry heavy scotch, cognac, Diet Coke, squirt (grapefruit soda goes great with floral sticks), McDonald’s sweet tea —just to name a few favorites.

Mostly long or brewed coffee for me.

But sometimes a glass of rum, especially for an evening smoke.

I’ve tried just about every drink over the years, but in the end nothing can equal a good cup of coffee for me. Coffee to me works with any type of cigar, Cuban or NC. I enjoy rum with some sticks and Islay works well with some earthier, full-bodied cigars. But if I have a secret weapon it’s port. That’s the most versatile alcoholic option for cigars in my experience.
