El Presidente Posted Wednesday at 10:41 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:41 PM Dishes you just "don't get". My number 1 contender & apologies to my Cuban mates. Why don't you just swap fried plantains for cardboard chips? Will never understand it. 2 1
Chibearsv Posted Wednesday at 11:01 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:01 PM I agree. I’ve never understood the appeal of plantains except that they might add a mushy texture to a dish. Otherwise, they are tasteless. 2 1

I know it is a traditional peasant filling dish, but so is Paella. With Italian in-laws, ...I just grin and bear it or pass at every opportunity. 1

In it's base form, its just with a nice beefy ragu. It's best made into "fries". Basically, rectangular, firmer pieces, deep fried and paired with sauces as an appetizer.

We couldn't stop laughing for about 5 minutes. 1

Jack Posted Thursday at 05:16 AM Posted Thursday at 05:16 AM Probably a mid-century American thing, but: Tamale Pie Pork chops cooked in a sticky brown sugar "sauce" until any possible flavor was killed off Any shrimp/prawn dish where the shells are supposed to be eaten Laverbread - don't be Welsh in America and visit relatives near the coast as a child. The thing of nightmares. Spoiler - it's not bread.

MagicalBikeRide Posted Thursday at 10:14 AM Posted Thursday at 10:14 AM Cottage pie - or beef stew with mash potatoes. Love slow cooked / braised beef dishes, but I don’t get how some people eat them with a side that has the same texture. So much better with some crunchy bread and / or roast baby potatoes.

Popular Post Chibearsv Posted Thursday at 12:13 PM Popular Post Posted Thursday at 12:13 PM White chili. If it's white, it aint chili. Just call it chicken and bean chowder and don't bring it to a chili cookoff! Sorry, personal remembrance kicked in there. I judged a chili cookoff several years ago and somebody brought it. I refused to taste it for the contest on principle. Lots of arguing that day including my wife trying to convince me to let it go. As you can see, I haven't. 1 6

I think you just need to switch islands Rob. West Indian fried Plantain is gorgeous. The plantain is aged a bit longer in its skin, and therefore gets a lot sweeter. Cut thickly and slow cook in oil/butter, the result is a moist salty sweet addition to your plate, that works perfectly with hard fried fish or smoky jerk pork. I too think plantain 'chips' are pointless, but not fried plantain...totally different beast. 5
