Wookie Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I was thinking about El Prez’ recent EAR post about RASS. There are lovers and haters out there. I personally love RASS, along with other aromatic smokes like SC, HU, SLR. Is it the stewed fruits taste that is so off-putting for the haters? I like a good Cohiba but, gasp, I prefer RA, Montecristo, Trini, etc. (My least favorite is HDM, though I’ve had spectacular samples). Interested in what makes RASS so divisive? 1
Popular Post Islandboy Posted March 26 Popular Post Posted March 26 It’s definitely the stewed fruit for me...it becomes a concentrated sweetness that borders on something fermented. But the most divisive CC IMO is Por Larranaga Picadores. They taste like unseasoned steamed broccoli to me 🤢 2 5 1
Popular Post JohnS Posted March 26 Popular Post Posted March 26 In comparison to other Ramon Allones offerings, the Specially Selected stands out for its strength also. (Another reason potentially why it has the following it does, perhaps.) However; if you really want to be divisive, mention any Cuaba vitolas and you'll surely get some strong opinions one way or the other. After that, it wouldn't hurt to cite any Romeo y Julieta cigars, either. 7 1
jhalischuk Posted March 26 Posted March 26 To me, RASS tastes like artificially flavored/sweet coffee. Same with RAG. One of the few (only?) marcas I really dislike. They're some of the most vibrant flavours I've tasted in a cigar, kinda wish I liked them more. 1

I feel like more people dislike R&J than like it, so perhaps not split opinion in that regard. Re RA generally - I feel like the majority of people here enjoy it. https://www.fohcigars.com/forum/search/?q="Deep Dive: Ramon Allones"&updated_after=any&sortby=relevancy&search_and_or=or 2

Loved the gold band Churchills back in the late 1990s. Not as much anymore. But I have a ton of them (2014-2021) and still smoke once in a while. 3
Lucas Buck Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I would say Sancho Panza. Many find them too salty. I love them. 3

Wanting to like them though. And, by the way, I thought Esplendidos in the 1990s were amazing. My boxes from 2014-2018 are fine, but not as I remembered them from 1990s. 2
Popular Post Chibearsv Posted March 26 Popular Post Posted March 26 I wouldn’t touch RASS until 5 years. I’d call them sickly sweet mongrels before they have time to smooth and balance. 5
david9985 Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I agree with RASS and I think BBF falls in the same category. I'd be interested to know if there was a correlation between loving RASS and loving BBF vs loving one and not getting the other or vice versa?? 1

But I don’t seek them out anymore. But most do based on 24/24. 1

Different flavor profiles but I’d agree from the standpoint of both needing plenty of time down. 2
BlueWS Posted March 27 Posted March 27 I'm with @Islandboy, Mr. Jones on this one. I had a two year old RASS yesterday and didn't like it. They smell okay but taste sour to me. The stewed fruit note is definitely there or what I think someone called Xmas Candied Nut Loaf. That nasty cake we get in the US during Xmas with dried fruit in it. So weird. I'll save the last two RASS for when I'm 60, only ten more years! I love BFF and I find it has nothing in common with RASS. I don't like PLPCs whatsoever (never had one past 1 yr old, sorry) gave em all away. My mental notes on those were dried urine. H. Upmann Royal Robustos are a huge miss in my book. I like all the other Upmanns, but those things I don't get. They're like a bad marriage of Connie 2s and Mag 54s that married and divorced on the same day. Diplo 2 for me was a strange blend. I've only had one from a 4 year old box, but I did not like the first third at all. I will give another one a shot before I write a slam piece on Diplo 2s. 3

I've really enjoyed the R&J line personally - some of the best cigars I've smoked are smaller ring gauge Romeo y Juliet cigars but agree that HdM is divisive. I'd also throw Cuaba in that mix. I love the figurado shape but get nothing but peanuts from the entire line (similar to what my palate picks up with most Jim Beam bourbon offerings outside of Old Grand Dad). Peanuts for days. 1 1
pohlmad Posted March 27 Posted March 27 I think RASS is probably correct but a close second in my personal experience are the Trinidad Fundadores. It’s about 50/50 in my friend group and no matter which side they are on, it’s extreme love or extreme hate. Very divisive! 1
BrightonCorgi Posted March 27 Posted March 27 I like the whole RA line up, past and present. From 898, Corona, to their bread-and-butter cigars like Gigantes, etc... Never thought their profile was that divisive. Fonseca, on the other hand; that really divides the crowd. 2
