For me it was JR cigars. I had a cigar chomping boss when I did a college summer internship on Wall Street in late 1980s. We drank coffee and smoked in the office.

2006-2007

I don't know why I was suddenly interested in Cuban cigars, but I had no access in the States. Also remember following a guy on YouTube seemed very knowledgeable with Cubans and history...DrJoeshow if I remember correctly. I remember doing a lot of research and deciding on Cohiba Siglo VI Tubos 3 pack for €100 (my dad was taking trips to Hungary every 5-6 years). I can still remember to this day how good it was. My first box purchase was in 2008 R&J Regalias de Londres in Amsterdam.

I still remember being a poor college student and standing in a supermarket when I saw a Dominican Montecristo Tubo. If I’m honest, it was the packaging and design that got my attention. The cream color of the tube and the red twist on top.

It looked almost good enough to eat. I walked over and cracked open the top and sniffed. To this day, every time I smell a cigar, a small part of me is transported back to that moment. There was something magical about that first experience. A mix of sweet hay and funk.

There was also something mysterious, it felt somehow forbidden even though I was old enough to buy one. Just the idea that you’re not supposed to do this.

I bought that Tubo and took it to my uncle’s house - the only guy who would allow me to smoke it and not give me grief about it. I think I made it maybe a quarter of the way down, but the experience made me fall in love with cigars forever.
