Completely agree. I don’t think the newer betters understand the vig either. From what I’ve seen, it’s ridiculously high on those apps. I was much happier with “my guy”. I didn’t have to front my wager, 10% vig only on the losing side.  Settled on Wednesday at the Chinese restaurant. Those were the days. My guy didn’t advertise, quite the opposite.  He’d rather be unknown 😁

Same. H A T E the online betting apps, etc. The ads are everywhere.  Up here in Canada lots of hockey players are shilling for this greasy crap. Connor McDavid, Wayne Gretzky and many others. Very disappointed in Wayne especially. His good guy image really got tarnished with this move. And recently of course as he switched from Centre to Right Wing. 🤪

I miss the days when we had an SP bookie. Our SP bookie (illegal) was Terry. He used to deliver winnings or pick up losses (mostly) in his Toyota Tarago...hence his nickname in our circle of "Terry Tarago"

Terry was a great guy. I remember after a long afternoon of losses on Melbourne cup day (we would call in by phone every bet), we were well beyond our best and asked Terry to take some bets on the South African races that were just about to start. Artie, PJ, Hutley were all on board. We had to recover $1500 in losses.

"Rob, I could take those bets...but can I perhaps advise, you have taken enough beats for the day".

He was right. God bless Terry and the SP Bookies :lol3:

AI

Automation

Robots

Deepfake

Digitalization

and all that comes with it.

Some call it the next industrial revolution. I am just getting angry, annoyed and worried about this but also concerned for the next generation and many people who will struggle to find a way to feed their families and take care of basic necessities.

Regarding work, a recent article showed research that half of all “work activities” will become automated, starting as soon as 2030. Universal income is already an established concept.

AI “will be hugely destabilizing for hundreds of millions who will, at the very least, need to re-skill and transition to new types of work,” wrote Suleyman who said that million jobs will disappear as we know them now.

His book "The Coming Wave" is like a horror sci-fi novel, only it is most likely reality soon. Don’t read it unless you enjoy sleepless nights.

Then others say new jobs will be created 3x. Hard to know.

No matter what it is happening, I think it is happening too fast. I cannot wrap my head around it and the more I educate myself, the more concerned I become.

People who take their mobile phones into the gym. Treadmill, bike etc you get a pass. Those who take their phones into the gym and sit on equipment between sets phone in hand...does my head in. The last place my phone will go is into the gym 🏋️‍defeats the purpose.

What is peeving you off/ pulling your chain right now?

My pet peeve right now is the infestation of Sports betting App Advertising.

I have one. I use it on Melbourne Cup day and on the very rare occasion that Ben or Artie send me a "hot tip".

online app betting came late in my life. It has only been readily available here in Oz for the past 10-15 years.  However anecdotally, and it is simply based on my experience, App betting for males under the age of 35 is rampant. NBA/NFL/Cricket/Horses/Dogs/Camels...anything and everywhere. I have an addictive personality but the easy access betting App came too late in life for it to become ingrained.

I can understand it. When it comes to sports, you can't escape the incessant advertising accompanied by the trite warning "only bet what you can afford to lose"  or some derivative of that message.

at least here there are no advertising restrictions. Prime time football (any code) and there it is front and centre and repeated relentlessly. I am not sure if that is the same in your part of the world.

What pisses me off is that 5-6-7 year olds ( all kids), are being brought up to believe that sports betting is a normal part of your life. look at the advertisements, betting is a social activity...you and your mates having a great time....bla bla bla. No time restrictions for betting advertising? Really?

Does anyone believe this is healthy?....am I just an old dodger.

Rant over

Borders on the margins of conventional morality. Cashing in on peoples misfortune and misery, htf are betting agencies the major sponsors of our biggest sporting organisations in Australia? In line with alcohol and tobacco sponsorship if you ask me.

People talking on their phones on speaker everywhere, even in crowded places. Not just the younger ones, nothing seems to be private anymore and I just don't get it 🧐

Advertising for betting apps have been all around for more than a decade here too and it's dangerous. I remember one time I had a multiple bet on 15 La Liga football games and had 14 right out of those, even 15 until the last minute of the last game...I would have made a fortune but... c'est la vie... I felt so furious for hours after that I simply deleted the app, I had realised I could never become a healthy better given my addictive personality 😅

No big fan of flippers either, though they're just the result of HSA's policy 🤔

The best is when they use "Gamble Aware" emails to check in on you and make sure you're still having fun. Wasn't even thinking about gambling before the email, they know what they're doing!

Haha really nice to see a thread investigating the morality of some aspects of negative commerce...that I didn’t start!!  Lol.

100% agree with you on absolutely everything here Rob. I have got nothing against the odd flutter, it should be fun, the thought of workplaces all around the country tuning into the Grand National gives me very fond memories, the excitement, everyone giving each other shit, the hilarity, the camaraderie. There is a lot of positivity there. Laying a bet should be a bit of a scramble, a bit of an effort,  that’s part of the fun. Critically it also provides that little bit of time where people can stop and ask themselves, do a really what to do this?

Gambling should not be exploitative. It should not follow you home, follow you to the toilet...or gym. It should not ruin millions of people lives every year.

The messaging from gambling companies is absolutely toxic. Even when they are telling people to take a break, there is an edge of venom in it. i.e. “It’s OK to take a break, bet what you can afford, time for some relaxation, take the missus for a holiday, come back refreshed with a clear head, a head for numbers, seeing it all clearly, ready to take on the world, the horses, the football, the darts, you’ll have the Midas touch and be ready to hit the final furlong on turbo boosters!!!!"…yadda yadda yadda. The basic message is, "You’re not free, I’m just going to let you recover a bit, so I don’t tap you out."

I find in game betting to be the worst. I remember Ray Winston’s adverts. A well known ‘hard man’ from movies like ‘Scum’ or ‘The Departed’. He’s got the vibe of someone who’s going to smash your head off a toilet seat, if you don’t put £100 on Luton FC to come back from 5-0 down at half time. Utterly pathetic...but very affective for some.

One thing I would add to this Rob. (Not to be flogging a dead horse...ba dum…tisss!!). If Web 3.0 existed, you’re full betting history, and habits would be kept securely and owned by you. If you chose to let a host of suppliers temporarily access your data, for a single transaction (bet)…they would know exactly what kind of bet you are likely to take, and then they would compete to give you the very best odds customly tailored to you. Bet taken, your bet it recorded with the rest of your data, not theirs. The access is removed. You’ve got the bet you wanted. The supplier didn’t have to randomly sand blast you with adds, your data told them what you wanted, and they accurately gave it to you.

Sounds pretty good to me. Anyway…just sayin'.

This 1,000x! Not only do the possible side effect disclosures disturb me to the core, but the ridiculous actors & scenes set up in production force me to grab the remote immediately.

Yeah, me too. I mean who goes into their doc's office and asks for some med that was advertised? Don't care for the bent carrot commercials either.  :tantrum:

You have to ask? Gambling, and that’s what it is, is fun. And I’m of the opinion that anything that's fun is dangerous. If it was a healthy activity the industry wouldn’t have tried to rebrand it as gaming. The earlier kids are introduced to addictive substances and activities the more likely it is that they will become dependent on them. I’ve know a couple of hard core gambling addicts, guys who had been betting all of their lives, who defended to their death their right to gamble and it’s had an effect on my opinion about the whole issue. Don’t get me going about state run lotteries and scratch tickets that enlarge state coffers.

So what really pisses me off? Right now it’s the inability to get any kind of business done on the phone. For any service where I need an answer to a question that is not included in a phone menu it’s wait 90 minutes, wait for a call back, or they outright hang up.

For me at the moment it is seeing people on their phones scrolling constantly. I have an image seared into my memory from this fall...I was walking my dog passed a playground and there was a child sitting on a swing with a sad expression, while their dad was sitting on a bench on his phone ignoring his kid. People cant seem to be in the moment anymore without constantly being on their phones. For me the only reason to take a phone while going for a walk outside is so I can take pictures of my dog. I am also seeing people in the sauna at the local Rec Centre, scrolling while sitting in a sauna, can't you take 15 minutes without being on your phone, I really feel for our next generation and what we are teaching them about what is important.

Another thing that is pissing me off is the state of my back yard cigar lounge, I am done with winter and ready for spring.
