I thought Mooloolaba was good as it was. Then I ordered from Fabrica 5 to see the term Woolloongabba. I googled wooloo and mooloo names and sure enough there is a Woolloomooloo 😂. What other names are out there?

You wouldn't believe how many names of places in Australia have Aboriginal origin!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_place_names_of_Aboriginal_origin

Some places are so synonymous with a 'modern cultural' meaning that I would expect most Australians would have no idea of the Aboriginal origin of their names. For example, if you ask someone who lives in Sydney about the eastern suburbs of Woollahra and Bondi, to them it would mean places that are not affordable to live and the beach.

Goonoo Goonoo is a well-known old cattle station near my home town, now has a very swanky restaurant on it. It’s pronounced “Gunna Goonoo”

There’s many more. Wagga Wagga is another prominent one. Pronounced ‘Wogga Wogga”

i used to live near Woolloomooloo. inner city Sydney.

as for woolloongabba, every aussie knows it. almost always shortened to the gabba, it is extremely famous as one of the world's great cricket grounds (the suburb is inner city brizzy and where you'll find FOH HQ). it is also home to the mighty Lions Aussie Rules team, current premiers. any local kid who did not spend thousands of hours in his youth at the Gabba is not a true Aussie. sorry, but that is the eleventh commandment. in the old days, pre and post games, you could wander around the bowels and meet some of the world's great cricketers. before games, you'd be on the field next to the players having a hit (we'd throw their balls back to them, they'd do the same and some we knew - a few were local teachers - so they'd include us). none of this happens today.

many wonderful names. always liked grong grong, though no idea where it is. grew up at Indooroopilly, which actually has a song written about it, and how you can learn to spell it - for its i n d double o r double oo p i double l y, it drives the strangers silly, because they can't spell Indooroopilly.

what is annoying many Aussies is the push to rename everything with aboriginal names. there are already hundreds of names used, just as there are hundreds of other names. as far as i am concerned, up to the day they bury me and beyond, it will remain fraser island, not some ridiculous woke replacement. never!

Every now and again I’ll see a charge on my credit card from Wallawallaby. I don’t pay it much mind. I assume that I’d been drinking rum…

I learn something every day here. Sometimes it's things I wish I didn't know.

Wagga Wagga can be referred to as Wagga, but Woy Woy can't be called Woy.
