I was just thinking this morning how Clayton Kershaw could be brought back without paying a luxury tax? Defer completely a 1-year deal? @MrBirdmanand I had a good discussion about this last month. There's a strong risk when a team has done what the Dodgers has done because in the future they will be potentially left paying millions and millions of dollars to aging former superstars. To add further, if the current owners, the Guggenheim Baseball Management team, run into financial difficulty and are forced to sell, the new owners would potentially be left with a massive debt to retired players for a very long time. Which is what the Guggenheim Baseball Management team did in 2012 when they bought the LA Dodgers from Frank McCourt when he had to declare bankruptcy and sell the team in 2012. Serenity now, insanity later!

The way things are going I suspect he will be signing with the Dodgers after the 2025 season. Finally some good news for the Toronto Blue Jays...Anthony Santander agrees to a 5-year, $US90 million commitment with the team. Which means that Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman are in no way going there. In fact, thanks to their agent, Scott Boras both Alonso and Bregman are going nowhere, literally-speaking, at the current time. 2
Ford2112 Posted January 20 Posted January 20 @JohnS Kershaw needs to retire a Dodger. He's a class act and was the face of that Organization. 3

Serenity now, insanity later! For me, John, the potential calamity down the road is a distant secondary concern to the fact that any competitive balancing measure should surely be exacted upon the current team you are putting on the field, not the one on the golf course in twenty years' time. As I've said before, a little creative payroll management is always going to be a thing in elite sport. And I actually applaud the ability to glean a little advantage from a loophole. This, however, is starting to feel like a gaping hole. MLB need to act. 3
Tinny Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Looks like SF giants might get Alonso at a bargain to play 1b then when Eldridge gets called up (this guy is tearing up minor league pitching) and moving him to DH, so far so am loving the moves Posey has been making, sucks we missed out on Burnes though. 1

They have been speculation on Alonzo for a couple months. But this Eldridge kid has something. Luciano was a hype job that failed, meanwhile Ramos was a surprise. Same with Matos. We are building up pitching in the minors and I look to Posey to really come through with the farm system. Remember, we got Posey, Madbum, Cain and Timmy among others in that particular class. Buster understands the game. Hope springs eternal! 1

And of course, I agree that there needs to be a standard to maintain and protect fairness and competitiveness. 1

The juice is worth the squeeze…..until it isn’t. Every team has the ability to take the risk, but not many (very few) are willing to. 1
JohnS Posted January 22 Posted January 22 On the one hand, the deferral issue isn't as big a concern as the fact that all these players are opting to go to the LA Dodgers because they are outbidding everyone else. The other teams, such as the NY Mets, NY Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays have money and are willing to spend. Same with the SF Giants and AZ Diamondbacks. So, it seems there is only one way to go and that is towards re-defining a Salary Cap at the next Collective Bargaining Agreement. However, I personally have no qualms with anyone arguing that certain teams choose to stay "small market" when they have the funds from gates and TV revenue. They're being anti-competitive too and represent a problem on the other end of the scale.
BigGuns Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I need to look this up, but I believe I’ve read that in some cases, LAD was not the highest bidder, just the most attractive destination.
David8406 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Minter might be a good pickup for the Mets or he might not. He goes through spurts where he looks great but then holy cow can he go through some ugly stretches. You can tell he wants it…I’m pulling for him. I worry about the status of our (Braves) pitching staff and the lack of off-season acquisitions. Anthopoulos usually finds a way to improve the team each year so not too worried yet. No real way to keep pace with the Dodgers…just gotta hope they don’t come into the playoffs hot.

MoeFOH Posted February 13 Author Posted February 13 On 2/14/2025 at 5:16 AM, JohnS said: And will he play third base? I think he'll start the season at 2nd, John, and migrate to 3rd, either by design or necessity, with Raffy at DH (or even 1st if needed). With 3 kids expected to force their way into the team at some point this year, he's a fantastic infield piece to have. Also, I've spent enough years hiding behind the couch when he stepped up to the plate, especially in big games, so it'll be nice to be on the other side of things. And there's this... He absolutely rakes at Fenway Park. Bregman has made 98 plate appearances in 21 games at Fenway over nine MLB seasons. Here are his stats in those 21 games: .375 batting average (30 for 80), seven home runs, nine doubles, 15 RBI, .750 slugging percentage, 1.240 OPS
JohnS Posted February 14 Posted February 14 With statistics like that, he's a good acquisition for the Red Sox, then!
