Is it just me, or is it getting increasingly difficult to find cinema or streaming titles that excite with an upcoming release? 🤔

I thought the Joker 2 would be something, but it apparently shat the bed. And then there's Megaflopolis. :D

At the moment, pinning my hopes on these 2 below.

That said, I'm revisiting Pulp Fiction on the big screen next month, and I'm sure it will easily outclass anything I can hope to see in the near future. Maybe that's the future of cinemas... re-runs of classics.

Got any titles on your radar or ones recently watched worthy of note? Post em up!

Joker 2 was fantastic! But the average movie watcher these days has the attention span of a gnat. (And the idea of a modern musical isn't attractive to many.)

Having spent far too many years in the industry I'm ok with a revolution.

I don't really look forward to anything, but I know there many creative beings with ideas and I always have hope for the future.

Thanks. I'm seeing it is getting a love/hate reaction out there. I'll still take it on, as it looked visually stunning in the trailer and I was really impressed by the casting of Lady Gaga... but I had no idea it was a musical till recently - as I believe is the case for most. And I have to say, that immediately makes it a hard sell upfront for me. Doesn't mean I won't like it, Rocky Horror is one of my all-time faves, but it's not a genre I gravitate to at all.

Or a bug... wait a minute... bug... gnat... do I detect a little similarity there? :D

Jeepers, most people didn't know it was a musical Moe! (BTW I haven't seen "Joker 2" - I just read the backlash during the first week.)

However, I must agree that the trailer looked stunning. 😮‍💨

It seems like the whole world has moved to streaming.

There are some brilliant movies and series (made for house) on Netflix/Paramount/Disney etc.

I would hate be in the movie theatre business right now. The numbers over the past three years have been diabolical.

Yes Covid didn't help. However, immersive entertainment is on the rise, they should convert some of the venues for sports and the like, this is from COSM I believe. Image from a recent UFC fight. Even better than the real thing if you ask me.

There's not much for me. I'll watch Venom Last Dance because it's got Tom Hardy and I've a faint curiosity towards Gladiator 2 even though most of me is screaming to stay away, but that's it.

This weekend will be a revisit of Silence of the Lambs and No Country for Old Men.

Not much on my radar, it's been a while since a movie made me want to go to the theatre 🤔

Streaming platforms have transformed the whole game as ElPrez says...

This weekend I'll rewatch Unforgiven and Whiplash.

I couple of things I really struggle with at the moment:

  • Productions opting for incredibly dark lighting, so you can barely see what's happening...this is fainted as a stylistic thing, but often you can tell, it's just to hind how cheap and unfinished the sets are, the darkness doesn't actually tie in with the plot.
  • Because of the huge churn of production, and CGI, it seems the art of enriching a narrative of plot with hands on camera work, perspective, the score etc etc. all feels like it's gotten worse, not better.
  • You look at the richness and effect of camerawork like that of "Night of the Hunter" or "Citizen Kane", they are very simple in essence, but are hugely expressive and leading to the viewer. We've lost this somewhere along the way.

Hollywood also doesn't care about box office numbers anymore and are abandoning theater business owners. Its no longer the VCR/DVD days when Hollywood would wait months after it stopped playing in theaters to sell. They know the money is in digital. Any movie im interested in is available for digital purchase while it is still playing in theaters. I love the theaters with Barca loungers and serve beer for "the experience." But more often than not, I'm lazy and just want to click a button and watch at home.

@MoeFOH

Unfortunately "Substance" had very little substance beyond the trailer.

Ultimately I find that remakes and extensions (prequels/sequels) of previous movies (Venom, Deadpool, Alien, Joker) tend to be lacklustre at best. Top Gun: Maverick was pleasant surprise.

Resuscitating the likes of Crow and Gladiator = debatable.

Some that I have enjoyed recently:

Knox Goes Away - Michael Keaton

Sleeping Dogs - Russell Crowe

1992

Nothing appearing on the horizon for the upcoming months (in terms of trailers that I have caught my eye).

The Penguin is shockingly good on HBO. I’m not a Batman fan but this series got me.

It's part of the genius of a really well made movie to develop a character in a short period of time.  The Joker is a great recent example of that, so was Green Book, The Holdovers, and there's a handful of others each year.  I'm also a huge fan of cleverly written dialogue which is relatively rare.  Tricky part is finding these kind of movies when re-treads, kids movies, and action seems to be Hollywood's favorite productions.  I looked back at the last 5 years of Oscar nominations for best picture to see if I liked any of them and was surprised to see there's at least one or two each year that I thoroughly enjoyed for the reasons above.  I don't mind the occasional action movie or retread and I don't expect them to be great, I just expect them to be entertaining.

Nothing's really hit my radar yet this year, but I'm pretty sure something will.

And there's plenty of premium shows that are really good. Just finished watching The Rings of Power which I wasn't wowed by in season 1, but they redeemed themselves in season 2. For LOTR fans, it's worth a watch.

Agreed, they struck the right balance and Colin Farrell is very good.

EXACTLY!!!

I remember when movies like "Jurassic Park," "Titanic," "Saving Private Ryan," and even the original "Avengers" played for months in theaters, sometimes a year. Now with Netflix, Hulu, et al people can see first run movies sooner and that's part of the reason I stopped going to the cinema a long time ago.

Whenever Godfather 1 and 2 are on TV while flipping channels, I stop everything and watch. Lately they are showing Godfather everyday either on SHO or HBO.

Al Pacino wrote a memoir/autobiography. He’s been doing a media blitz and he’s telling a lot of great stories about actors, movies, money and fame. In the beginning he never paid attention to his finances and his money manager stole all his money. Fifty million dollars.

Goodfellas didn’t suck.
