I have seen cigar sommelier's light cigars uncut, twirl them around dramatically until they are burning and then cut them.  

My tip is to wet the head of the cigar, wait a minute then cut the cigar.  Never crack the head again.

PS: I almost always blow a good 30 seconds into young cigars before lighting them up and I get that same reaction from other cigar smokers 😉

I don't cut it until it's lit.  I haven't done a side by side in at least a decade but I found that the first half inch or so was better on the light then cut version.
