364 days ago I sat in the hot sun and watched my beloved Lions go down by less that a goal to the villains of Aussie rules football - Collingwood. Came back next season for a shot at redemption from a season and finals campaign where everyone had counted us out over and over again, and for the first time since 2003 we got the job done in emphatic style against the team who topped the table. Doesn’t get any better than that.

I didn’t rate our chances highly otherwise I would have brought a Cohiba to Melbourne with me. As it is, here’s a Petit Churchill, a nonetheless simple but reliable friend.

Opening third: creamy and sweet. Vanilla wafer, glacé cherries. Decided to pair with a glass of Baileys which brought forth from the cigar toasted wood and salted nuts. Despite scoring twice the number of goals and behinds as Sydney, Brisbane barely won the inside 50s 51-49, a testament to both our defensive efforts and quality of entries in attack.

Middle third: less cream, and a development of dried fruits - bitter dark raisins, dried banana. Slight drop in body, perhaps due to smoking too hot. Let it cool a bit, while the body didn’t lift, some of that biscuity cream re-emerged. At 20 years of age, Will Ashcroft is now the youngest Norm Smith medallist in AFL history, racking up 30 disposals at 87% efficiency.

Final third: changing pace with a pairing of Muscat (Stanton & Killeen Classic from Rutherglen VIC). This brought the cream flavour back stronger, although this time less biscuity and sweet, now reminding me of a plant-based milk (e.g. soy or oat milk). Bit of sourdough bread, minimal fruit. Ryan Lester debuted for the Lions in 2011 but was on the fringe in-and-out of the 22 with short-term extensions for years, even surviving a delisting then redrafting in 2022. The past few years he has cemented his place in the squad and is a fan favourite due to his loyalty as well as being a very likeable person, and now Froggy Friggen Lester is a premiership player.

I rate this cigar 120 points out of 60.
