StogieLoki Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 Sam Harris’ “Making Sense” podcast is pretty thought-provoking. Not sure where he lays on the spectrum of those 4 million shows lol
JohnS Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 Baseball is a game that is full of statistics. Frankly, no-one needs them to know that Shohei Ohtani is a once-in-a-lifetime player. And I'm not even a Dodgers fan. So there you go. You definitely did not hear this here first! 2 1

At one point there were presumably just a handful of Homo Sapiens Sapiens! And in a similar vein: we all share a common ancestor, estimated to have lived around 200,000 years ago. The thing I find crazy about the original statistic I quoted is that I am 50 next month. So there are twice as many people in the world now, compared to when I was born in 1974. 3
Ford2112 Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 "I'm about to give you one of my all-time favorite statistics: Rickey Henderson walked 796 times in his career LEADING OFF AN INNING. Think about this again. There would be nothing, absolutely nothing, a pitcher would want to avoid more than walking Rickey Henderson to lead off an inning. And yet he walked SEVEN HUNDRED NINETY SIX times to lead off an inning. He walked more times just leading off in an inning than Lou Brock, Roberto Clemente, Luis Aparicio, Ernie Banks, Kirby Puckett, Ryne Sandberg and more than 50 other Hall of Famers walked in their entire careers ... I simply cannot imagine a baseball statistic more staggering.[108]" -Joe Posnansky SI 2

To make put that into perspective…there are more atoms in a Tablespoon of water than seconds that have existed since the big bang. So it is most likely that every order a playing card deck can be shuffled hasn’t existed yet. 2

JohnS Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 I can't get my head around how Rickey Henderson stole 130 bases in 1982. Seriously, how many bases would he steal nowadays with the change in rules making basestealing easier? 2
