zeedubbya Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 This might not exactly be a stat, but the estimated AGE of the images coming to the James Webb telescope are just mind-boggling. Even this, is mind- boggling. Now it’s captured images which are 10B years old! 🤯 “This image shows the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago, with many more galaxies in front of and behind the cluster. Much more about this cluster will be revealed as researchers begin digging into Webb’s data. This field was also imaged by Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which observes mid-infrared light.”

If you held your index finger outstretched to the night sky, this frame is about the equivalent size of your fingernail. That is a LOT of galaxies!
chasy Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Assume it’s 10b year old bc by the time we capture that image (speed of light), the actual solar system is 10b years older?

Hmm, India and US are #1 and #3 in population. In India, almost all domestic "whisky" are spirits distilled from molasses (so basically they are also counting rum). 1
