Storage of cigars in cardboard packaging.

I have always been interested in the question: how to store cigars in cardboard packaging? Should I put the cigars in the humidor in a pack or take out the cigars and store them separately? Is the smell of paper transmitted to cigars?

This is the age old question my friend. I would try searching the forum for this very question as it has been discussed quite a bit. 

I used to pull all my cigars out of the cardboard petacas, and have had great ones in cardboard, but recently have been storing them in the original cardboard packaging (as some say it doesn't negatively affect their flavor). Some say the cardboard is a 'mold trap'. I think you'll have to experiment on your own and go from there.

I think depends how long it's in the cardboard.

Personally I think cardboard is not for long term storage, and is mainly for convenience. Toss it in the trash and store your cigars loose in a humidor drawer/tray, or find a suitable wooden cigar box than can accomodate their size.

Thank you all for the recommendations. I decided for myself that cigars don't belong in a cardboard box.

When I first started smoking around 2009, I bought many Petacas, RyJ, Trinidads, Cohibas. I've left them in their packaging and have never had a bad smoke. I still have 2005 Mag 46's in a 15 count Petaca that are ethereal smokes. Now, where people live, climate, their storage conditions play a big role in how their collection fares. I will say I've been pretty lucky in that none of these cigars have had any mold on them and smoked great. If anything, I've found they've kept rather well in their little cardboard coffins.

I've never had issues but I take them out anyway and store them in singles drawers.

I typically keep them in right after I get, while resting a bit. Then when I go to smoke one (typically 60-90 days after), I'll pull them all, just on the off chance it could "enhance" mold probability. It certainly doesn't enhance the taste, so why take the risk? is what I figure.

I always take them out, not because of the mold, I just don't like the smell of cardboard but maybe it's only a matter of taste as I see many of you on FOH just let them in for years without any trouble.

I take everything out tubos included. When I was starting out ran into mold with cardboard pack. Never again!

I'll add another layer to this conversation. Do any of you put your singles into cellophane to help protect them?

When I have half the boxes left, I put them in a zippered bag to save space in the humidor and the cigar flavors don't mix.

I bought a smaller cedar box that fits a 100 sticks for singles or recycle one of those box50 boxes.

If you plan to smoke cardboard cigars within 5 years of box code than leave as is. If in any doubt, I would take them out. Save the cardboard in case you want sell them or carry them as packaged later one.

Interesting. Do you leave the bags open or seal them?

I leave them sealed with cedar veneer.

I have a 17 year old box of Monty 5s in cardboard that are one of the best tasting sticks I have. Every bit of this top is subjective and strongly influenced by personal experience.

Think how great they would've been if in standard packaging!
