There's metal heads in here too. Can't dismiss Black Sabbath. I grew up listening to classical and bluegrass (father), country and gospel (mother). My first day of school riding the school bus, someone brought a radio and was blasting War Pigs by Sabbath. I don't know if I  was traumatized or what, but that sent me down the road of rock and roll.

As unlikely this is for me to say, I’m throwing The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd in. Progenitors of what is Southern rock and most of what Nashville country music has become. 🙂

Thanks for sharing! This will be my third Battle of the Bands edition and I certainly made some strategic errors in our 80s lineup having the #1 seed position I should have gone Purple Rain so with th

Led Zeppelin is the rock bands of '70

ABBA is the pop band of '70

Pink Floyd is the progressive rock band of '70

Mick Taylor Rolling Stones era is also worthy to mention.

Deep Purple and Black Sabbath were immensely popular behind the "Iron curtain" in the '70

Similar story here. My parents listened to the lighter music in the 60s and 70s. Jim Croce, Carole King, Neil Young, Beatles...I'll never forget the first time hearing Iron Man at my neighbors house. It was like walking out of darkness into the light.

And the initial voting brackets are up.  You can vote and / or participate in the contest, contest rules Coop is running here:

https://cigar-coop.com/2024/05/announcement-prime-time-jukebox-battle-of-the-bands-the-1970s.html

Quote

To enter, you must retweet the matchup with the hashtag #PrimeTimeJukebox. You can enter one time per matchup. The idea here is by retweeting, we will expand our reach and get to 600 votes. This is less than 20 votes per matchup, which is well within reach. The gift cards will not be drawn if we don’t get to 600 votes. This is an all-or-nothing offer here, so again, we encourage retweeting when you vote if you want to win. If the 600 votes are not reached, we will still draw for the two physical prizes but will not offer the gift cards.

First brackets:
Rumors vs. Saturday Night Fever:

Led Zeppelin IV vs. Spirits Having Flown:

Does it have to be actual bands? If not surely Marvin Gaye wins the 1970s hands down with What's Going On and Let's Get it on.

at least you win first prize for taking the piss!

if not actual bands, surely Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and Desire have very few challengers.

but i swear, my world is inhabited by heathens. not a single mention of Bruce and the E Street Band? no one? unless he was ruled out as a solo performer (tough on the Band), Greetings and then the Wild, the Innocent was not a bad start, but Born to Run and Darkness? i realise that this is like ringing a dinner bell for tiny minds but by any standards, two of the all time greatest.

apols, i see bruce was up there. against dolly parton. i think this supposed competition condemned itself to ignominy. has is dolly parton a "band"? how is billy joel a "band"? and how is Saturday night live an album by a band? it had numerous unrelated contributors.

I've said it before, civilisation and humanity are doomed. after this nonsense, the sooner the better. history will not be kind.

I think you'll find Dolly features two substantial supported acts!

In all seriousness Ken, yes Dylan amazing, granted. My input was based on putting a bit of variety in the mix, and quizzing the format on the basis of other submissions. The stuff people were putting out there felt like it was in a very tight niche, a bit like soul music never even happened.

I think we can all agree that if you limited the quality of music based on the clear definition of 'A Band', you probably wouldn't end up with the best music. Interestingly how would Dylan be defined, when his 'band' was 'The Band". Is he a A soloist? Or a band?

PS, tough luck on The Boss, that's got to sting!

yes, it does seem to be a little bit confused as to what it is trying to do. very muddled. no disrespect to those who organised it (and i use the word ''organised'' in its broadest and most generous sense), but it seems like a few mates got together and put up a few bands and/or albums and/or musicians they enjoy and gave it a fancy name. it has bugger all to do with a genuine attempt to assess what it claims, as far as i can see. we had a list of top albums or something like it recently which was assembled by monkeys throwing darts at a list. this is little better.

as for dolly up against bruce, spare me. not so much to sting but to confirm the inanity of the entire thing. if ever evidence was needed, there it is. it is also compelling evidence, as i have said before, that humanity is utterly doomed. how we have lasted so long will forever bewilder whatever comes next.

as an aside, i would have to check but i don't think The Band was still with his Bobness for Blood on the Tracks and Desire.

The "Battle of the Bands" isn't limited to just a band, but I can understand the confusion. The discussion around it was hashed out maybe two years ago now when it was just the artists competing.

Coop and Dave decided it'd be fun to do this by album, we've already gone through several decades.

You can watch the video or just check out the page lihk for the process involved. It's snake draft rules for each participant to draft their album.

As far as Bruce goes; historically he has not done well for albums or as an artist 🤷‍♂️

The title "Battle of the Bands" is misleading this is the "Battle of the Albums".

IMHO few titles that are missing that merit the participation.

Never Mind the Bollocks - Sex Pistols

Machine head - Deep Purple

Deja Vu - CSNY

Master of Reality - Black Sabbath

If we're talking albums then;

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Emerson Lake & Palmer

Yes - Fragile

Steely Dan - Aja

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Trilogy

Would call out anything led by Miles' "sidemen" - anything Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter/Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Tony Williams, Cannonball Adderley, etc., etc.

Special call out for Jaco Pastorius as well :)

Darryl Jones is a Miles Dewey Davis III band alumnus. As a Stones fan it is worth pointing out that Mr Jones replaced the retired Bill Wyman as The Rolling Stones’ bass player. While Jones is not a band leader any association with Miles is first class street cred.
