Is there suppose to be a name change? Is it required? Influencers...do we need them?

Well it seems El Presidente doesn't mind calling NCs as FWC. It's not required but it's fun to entertain the idea of a name change. We don't need influencers, and yet it doesn't hurt to have them around.

I don't mind how each one wants to call them, I just don't see the point. I don't mind about influencers (well maybe a bit lol) but I personally don't see a necessity for them. I have to admit that "influencers" is a broad term and it may mean different things to different people so YMMV.

I've never understood why non-Cubans are called "new world".  Wasn't Cuba and DR discovered at basically the same moment?  And Nicaragua and Honduras very shortly thereafter?

My understanding was that it's more of a historical/chronological reference, As you know, Tobacco and its usage had previously existed in Cuba by the time old world explorers arrived and discovered the New World.  Some years after the New World was discovered, as you know countries such as USA, Honduras, Nicaragua, DR, Ecuador etc. began growing/producing & curing tobacco. So it's kind of a before and after reference. 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😚💨

I always thought New World referred to the target of non Cuban producers (the USA to be clear) since in Europe cigar smokers smoked almost only Cubans and some local production such as Dutch cigars ( those Freud smoked on a daily basis) but the latter aren't really worth mentioning.

Those are just words we all agree upon to understand each other so it's no big deal.

To me there is Cuban cigars and there is the rest so CC and NC fit perfectly. My two cents...

You would be hard pressed to find a DR Puro in their line up

I'm sure not now, but they were making cigars in the DR in 1912. I had assumed they were not using Cuban tobacco but I suppose it's possible although it's very unlikely they were using DR wrappers ever, so I'll give you that.

Ha! watch former Beverly Hills Davidoff GM & Cigar Aficionado Aaron Sigmond weigh in on the term "New World" Cigars as an "imperialistic marketing term" invented by the UK Cigar sellers...

Interview actually has some other very fascinating bits. 😗💨

When speaking to countrymen regarding Cuban cigars vs. others I refer to the others as domestic cigars, meaning what is available domestically.

I am getting less and less concerned over who get offended. One cannot even keep one’s opinion to one’s self without offending someone.

Agreed...you can only do your part to be decent. Sadly, some people are lining up, waiting, hoping to be offended.

When you smoke you smoke one cigar so :

Cuban Cigars

Honduras Cigar

Nicaragua Cigars

Brazil Cigar

Italian Cigar

Dominican Cigar

etc

So many NC's are blends from different countries. You'd have to add "puros" at the end if single origin. FWC doesn't sound great to me. Falls into jingoistic language. Is Cuba less free than China? New world has more appeal and may be more accurate. And since so much language in the cigar world borrows from the wine world, it makes sense.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had to put this here. In his update on Cuban inventory, Eddie is hesitant to use NWC for political implications lol.
